Podcast App Crashing

Since updating to iOS13 my podcast app crashes every time I try to stream a podcast. Updates to 13.1.1 and 13.1.2 have not fixed the issue.

The only way I have been able to play a podcast is by first downloading an episode, navigating to downloaded episodes, then playing from there.

I had the same problem but could resolve it easily (after having two weeks frustration).

Just press the Podcasts app for one long second. Now you can choose one of your podcasts. It starts playing.

Go back to your normal screen and you can open the Podcasts app normally. It will not crash anymore (at least on my phone).

Seems to be working now. Spent 30 minutes on phone with Apple. There was an iCloud error earlier in day. Since someone said airplane mode stopped the crashing and Podcast app using iCloud to sync between devices, Apple reps started talking amongst themselves about this. After 15 minutes, started testing with them. Went 20 minutes with no crash at all and playback times syncing normally between devices. It looks like it may be fixed. Keeping case open with Apple to follow up if needed.

I am pretty sure the problem is linked to a huge list of un-listened-to podcasts (and possibly amount of available memory). I have also found that it reliably crashes when I use the "unplayed" list. As long as a podcast is actually playing, it seems to "hold" the app and prevent it from crashing. But getting one started before the app crashes is a trial-and-error thing. And I concur with someone else's observation: the app does not fully crash. If you look at your running apps after a crash (double home button or bottom-up swipe), the app is still there. But it isn't operational and it essentially reboots itself when you reactivate it.

Haven't tried the airplane mode thing yet. I'll try that next time I have the crash issue.

This app is completely broken. I can’t even get mine to send me a notification when I’m subscribed to a podcast. Apple has no idea whether the episode must be downloaded before getting the notification as per their website or get one when the new episode comes available. Now I can’t even stream one either. Apple should just scrap podcasts as they don’t support the app and don’t even know how it works. Apple support is just silly. However, what I don’t understand is why no one else here contacts Apple support? All you guys do is complain on this forum. Better do what I did and contact Apple support and report here. That helps others.

I have had a problem for the last week or so, where the app crashes whenever I click on the "now playing" podcast or try to view the queue of episodes coming after the current one. My solution was to click on any available podcast to play it now, and choose the option to clear all "up next" podcasts when prompted, rather than keep them. Problem solved (except that, annoyingly, the queue of upcoming episodes which I had painstakingly built up is now gone).
