Windows install "error"

I have an older MacBook Air running Mojave. Today I'm trying to install Windows 10 using BootCamp assistant. Windows install runs....then during the final restart to Windows, it hangs with the error message:

Restarting repeatedly just brings up the same error.

I started over with the earlier ISO image, with the same result.

No clue what to do at this point.

Thoughts?

Thanks

This will not work. You need a USB2 flash drive of 8+ GB.

by options do you mean the three possible options boot camp asks for on the first screen? If that’s the case they are all checked.

A 2014 Mac should show Create, Download and Install. I assume that is what you see.

  • Checking Create, automatically checks Download.
  • Unchecking Create allows you to Download the BC drivers to a USB2 Flash drive.
  • Install partitions and starts the W10 installer.

Has any hardware been replaced on your MBA?

Hmmm, I see. I'm not a software guy, but shouldn't the BootCamp assistant tell you that when you are starting the process (USB stick vs HD thing).

Yes. it does. See the second bullet under What You Need in Install Windows on your older Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support . There are no USB3 drivers on the Windows Installer. BC drivers provide USB3 support after Windows is installed.

The computer does not have the original SSD. It failed a year a go and I replaced it with a larger one from OWC (Aurora I think, 1 Tb)

Lack of the original SSD causes problems on MacBook Airs. OWC has tiny footnote on there website, saying it does not support Bootcamp. Please check with them.

Unfortunately I don't have that large of a USB stick handy (only have an 8gb here with me).... will grab one later today and try again.

If you have the original SSD and a USB2 Flash drive, it should work.

The present options available are Create, Download, and Remove (since presumably it sees the previous attempts at an install)

You will first need to Remove the old partition first - Remove Windows from your Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support.

Thanks very much Loner T. You were correct that the Aura SSD, despite the "enabler" is still not compatible with my MBAir 6,2 and BootCamp.

That info is buried in a tiny footnote on the Specs page (as you described). And the generic enabler app doesn't fix this specific incompatibility. I find that all to be rather deceptive honestly, especially for us who are not "computer professionals". I suppose technically it is in there. Just seems that they should highlight that sort of stuff especially since when one is purchasing the SSD, one specifies what model it is for.

Anyhow, thanks for the assistance!!!

Oh well,

I did not know where you got it. Try re-downloading it. Are your reformatting the Windows drive properly? If you are doing this on an SSD formatted APFS, then it will not work properly with Windows. You need to format the whole drive using HFS+ before creating the Boot Camp partition. The Windows partition should be formatted using NTFS being careful to only format the Windows partition and not your macOS partition.

OK....so I used a USB2 32 GB flash drive, and I installed the Dual Boot enabler from OWC (thanks for your reference).

I redid the whole process, and still ended with the same error message.

This is expected.

I have a support email into OWC but they're closed now. In the meantime any other thoughts? It seems the enabler is supposed to make the Aura SSD compatible, but.....

The models listed in the OWC link have proprietary Apple implementation.

Thanks

Please post back, once you hear from OWC. I expect them to say that you cannot install Windows via Bootcamp.

If you are willing to use Virtualization software, and accept the performance limitations, you should be able to use W10 on the larger SSD.

Thanks for the response.

I'm following the instructions exactly as dictated in those links. I've tried the ISO download and reinstall several times.

The SSD is indeed APFS. However, there is no mention anywhere that it needs to be HFS+. Aren't all modern Macs on APFS now?

And finally the windows partition is being created by the Boot camp assistant. I'm assuming it picks the correct format. Is that not the case?

Thanks
