Typing and editing text in iOS 13.1.2

Why has apple adopted a more android style text editing format? I’m so used to editing text quickly the “Apple way” that now it’s changed, editing misspelled words or adding in a space between words has become a chore.

For example,

editing the “b” out of “thanbks” is allot harder. Before I would just press on the screen and move the cursor to the “b” then backspace but now trying to get the cursor to go there without it highlighting the whole word or highlighting a whole bunch of text is tricky. Then, trying to get it to deselect all the mistakenly highlighted text is an extra farce! I’ve tried light touching, pressing hard etc and it’s basically impossible to edit these types of mistakes without deleting the whole word and starting again.

Anyone else noticed this since the update?

Hi everyone.

Yes, indeed, I noticed the same issue.

When I try to edit the label of an alarm, it is quite impossible to go between two words or between letters of a word.

And this problem appeared only after upgrade to ios 13.

Yes. I have been struggling with this issue in SMS, FB posts, and Gmail. It is a cross-app system change that is annoying as heck. I loved being able to press and hold for the cursor magnifying-glass viewer to pop up and allow me to position the cursor more accurately. Now, i just have to retype the whole word. I also am having trouble with the new word being typed coming up with a capitalized first letter. Why would it capitalize the word in the middle of the sentence? As a work-around I have taken to using the "mouse-pad" feature by pressing the area below the "space" bar, which brings up a more robust mouse option, allowing me to position the cursor in the edit place I need. But why are they doing this? Why are they making me change? Are they looking to alienate their customer base? It's working.

I wonder if they’ve done it to be more like android because I’ve only encountered these “problems” while trying to type on my clients phone which is an android device. (Each time I think thank goodness I’ve got an iPhone, couldn’t deal trying to type on this 🤣) Also, perhaps this is why they’ve added this new move cursor space bar thing - to get around the fact that you can’t edit the same way as before.

Just spent 2 hrs restoring updating and on phone to support x3 people

I had thought the text issues were a bug only eventually to find out it was an improvement???

Is there any notification system I can sign up to where I can be informed of the major changes with system upgrades

so that I don't have to waste time in the future

The support phone people were great but none of them had awareness that these issues related to an upgrade

and were trying to fix it with 1st a software update and the a factory restore before finally a restore and access to latest new editing funtionality info

Best way I found was to hold the space bar and use keyboard as tracker pad - and exploring "qucik text" which looks good once I have got used to it

If anyone from Apple (or community) is reading this thread can they please respond re sign up for info re op system changes?

Thanks Geoffrey

It was a redesign that was buggy with first update and the bugs were fixed with a second update but I still hate the “improvements”. Apple made these changes a few years ago with an update but quickly reverted back to to the way it was because of complaints. They should revert back to the way it was again.

IMO they are trying to bring iOS in line with the way android operates because all these new features they have implemented android already uses. I preferred the way Apple did things. I have an android given to me as a company phone and I absolutely hate it and now my iPhone types the same way! No thank you lol

Apple are cagey with information so I’m not aware of any thing you can sign up to unless there’s some sort of beta program to trial before the iOS gets released mainstream.

I just about threw my phone across the room a few minutes ago because I'm getting so fed up with this. When I'm texting someone, I tap a certain place to edit my text errors, and if I drag the cursor too high or too low, it exits out of edit mode, and then I have to retap the message and try again....and again....and again....and again....and again. The best solution I find lately is just to delete everything or a good majority and start over, being very careful. I'm really frustrated by this. If it's a bug or a glitch, it's not fixed yet. If it's a new feature, it needs some more work. Frustrating.

My lovely iPhone has been turned into a frustrating old android that I was using over 10 years ago!! I loved iPhone once upon a time. Now sending messages typing out texts is just plain awful. What have you done Apple?? What a hash, at least I know I’m not the only one thinking this. I must say, every now and then I get to use an old iPhone 5 that used to mine, I gave it away to a family member, thinking that newer was better ha! That phone has not been updated. Typing on that is sooo easy I hardly ever make a typo in the first place due to the design of that model. It is easy to hold and so easy to be accurate when typing. But if I do make a mistake I can easily and quickly edit it, heaven! ....I want it back.....☹️

It’s a nightmare... I have two iPhones (for different purposes) and thank goodness I only upgraded one of them to IOS 13. I will not upgrade the other iPhone or my iPad Air until Apple change this particular editing gesture back to the way it was. Because touch key is sensitive, even after holding down the cursor to enlarge and moving it to the misspelt word it often moves directly to highlight the whole word or the cursor moves somewhere else in the text... ITS BLOODY USELESS... it’s put me off purchasing another iPhone or iPad til this is fixed!
