Catalina - iPhone sync issues

So I upgraded to Catalina today, and then tried to sync my iPhone (knowing to expect differences with the upgrade due to the departure of iTunes). However, when connected, it just continues to sync, and there is no status bar to show the progress, so I'm left guessing where it's at, what it's doing. etc. It has been syncing now for over an hour, and still no signs of coming to an end any time soon. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thank you for sharing all this information. I looked at the /~Library/Preferences/ directory and found that I have 56 com.apple.*.plist files. So do you think it is safe to delete them all? Most of them look like they are config type files. I am having a hard time pulling the trigger on the delete button.

Third error I got is all I get now: "BACKUP SESSION FAILED". Edit: Just now, the error message in my attempt to backup, "Your phone disconnected.

Finally synched my music BUT it deleted an entire album and now it is as if I never bought it. Ironically, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club. That could be the mantra of all of us with the Catalina Catastrophe.

And I noted last update to iOS scrambled all my notes in my Contacts. Every **** time I update it does that.

I gave up Microsoft due to constant need for tweaking and went to Apple. For a few years, it was a good ride until this egregious OS.

I only find out this Question from community today, this question was out since Oct 2019 and today is Mid Dec which Apple still haven't solve this. This is close to unusable. I got a new iPhone 11. I wanted to sync 60GB of photos from Mac to my new phone. Initially load backup image from old phone to new phone didnt sync my photos (dont know why for some reason). Then I try to sync the whole 60GB again, it just took forever and never worked. Eventually I needed to sync folder by folder (I created a new path to sync, then I added one folder into this new path at a time). This process took me a week...

Apple serious needs to fix this

I finally had sync working--after signing out and back in to my apple account in about three places on my mac and on my iphone XS, and restarting both. Then I made the mistake of installing the update to 10.15.2, and of course now it won't sync again, even after signing out and in and restarting.

Tim needs to spend more time making sure a new OS is ready for roll out and less time meeting with you know who trying to get more tax breaks. Tim, you're already a billionaire. Don't blow that by putting out bad product.

That update is pure, unadulterated KLUDGE. In addition to not being able to synch or backup my phone, I just discovered I cannot watch my big collection of movies on Apple TV on my MacBook Air. I can watch them on my TV no problem. I stream them and refuse to download them as the hard drive is too puny.

This is worse than my first real computer and trying to get the modem to work. Things should be easier than harder. I bought apple products for ease of use. No more.

My Feedback to Apple was:

-Syncing of OSX photos causes duplicates on the phone. The sync process is very slow, existing photos are removed from the phone the added back during the process. It should be that just the new changes are added/removed.

-Items that cannot get sync'd due to an error are referenced with a long file name that are not easily reference in OSX photos.

-In the IOS photos tab it will constantly say syncing, even though the process appears to have stopped, or the phone is disconnected from the Mac.

-Originally used migration assistant to set up the iPhone Pro, but also set it up manually from scratch, both setups resulted in the same syncing issue.

-All these issues involve syncing between the Mac and the Phone, iCloud not used.

10.15.2 today unsuccessfully tried to drive me insane again trying to synch and update my 7+ on my MacBook Air and not allowing me to stream any of my movies on my Macbook Air via TV. I fought back hard.

It did synch my music so I stopped on a good note and did not synch further. Why did it synch today? Have no idea, I did nothing technical, opened and closed Music, turned settings off and on, rebooted computer.

Many unsuccessful attempts to backup phone to Air. "Could not check for an update to the carrier setting for your iPhone. This device is no longer connected." Next attempt, "iPhone is disconnected." Next," Backup session failed." I thought I was so smart by connecting my phone to Air while it was closed, then reopened it. Then the crazy beeps started on phone and I couldn't do anything. I have tried all manner of combinations and so far found it impossible to connect my phone by USB cable. I can't do an update or restore without it.

So I reauthorized the computer, did another reboot, connected my phone to computer via WIFI and looked at my backups, one from 2017 and another from 2019 pre 10.15.2. I clicked backup and a white circle appeared slowly turning black and the ***-**** thing finally turned all black. I held my breath, turned blue and nothing was happening. I clicked other options and came back to main screen and it updated! How, why? I looked at my backups and noted today it replaced the one earlier this year. Does the system only allow two backups? If so, why did it not replace the earlier update rather than the most recent one? I wonder, and do not recommend, if I have trouble backing up if it would help to go in and delete the most recent backup?

So, right now, my main problem is inability to link phone via USB cable. To be continued...

It seems that I am not having the same issues with syncing that I was to start with. For some reason, my phone will now sync in between 5-10 minutes. It's slower than it used to be pre-Catalina, but this seems to be my standard and I can cope with that. Long may it continue. There are still other issues with the sync process, but I am learning to live with them now, while still hoping that one day Apple will fix things so it works like before. I'm not holding my breath...

However, I have been wondering a couple of things.

Firstly, the syncing process is not supposed to be anything to do with iTunes anymore (or Music as it's now known). However, when the sync process shows as completed on Finder (the eject button reappears where the slowly filling circle was), and I try to eject the device, I get the warning that the device is still syncing, am I sure I want to disconnect it? And lo and behold, I find that my device in Music has a little slowly filling circle beside it too and it is still syncing there???

Secondly, if Music and TV are now completely separate, why are my video playlist folders showing up in the Music app on my iPhone after syncing, but filled with songs instead? They are not showing in Music on my MacBook. I have videos and songs with the same album names (they are songs and videos for my work) but this has never confused things in the past?

I don't understand the internal workings of these devices, but these things seem weird to me?

This update was absolutely horrendous. I've never had a more difficult and painful time syncing my iPhone to my Mac. It's slow, doesn't tell me what's going on, and even after it's done syncing, it doesn't properly sync everything even with the proper options selected. Then, when I try syncing again, right after a "sync", it still takes forever! This is not how it used to be. Awful.

That is ridiculous. The pie that doesn’t move for hours, 30 in my case, and not have a single thing synced.

Some brainiac decided for us that we don’t need to know that status of our sync. Not knowing what is actually going on is beyond belief.

What took 10 minutes to add a folder of photos now doesn’t even work after 30 hrs with the pie that didn’t seem to move past half way.

my solution using BootCamp with Windows 10, then moving my library to an external FAT32 hard drive is working perfectly and I do t plan on updating my iTunes.

I’ve had my iPad plugged up and syncing for 3 days and it’s still going. There is no progress status pie chart and only see in progress sync circle spinning on my iPad and in finder app. I’ve not been about to sync any of apple devices since Catalina OS was released. Also noticed that all my pictures stored on my external hard drive were removed from all devices after a sync was attempted. I’m over Apple and their support as well.

absolutely furious with Apple and Catalina. Never had so many issues with Apple before now. whilst syncing iPhone XR on Catalina for the umpteenth time it suddenly added a password for no known reason. Tried to guess password based on other apple passwords without success therefore had to reset phone to cancel password protected backup and start anew in accordance with Apple's own instructions.

Cancelled previous back-ups and tried to create a new back-up and keep getting the message that the last backup is unknown and any attempts to back-up result in error.

Seriously apple, WTF?
