Apple Music app, iOS 13.1.2, playing music from iPhone 6S over AVRCP Bluetooth on a Pioneer MVH-390BT aftermarket car stereo, autoplay and listing issues

I have a Pioneer MVH-390BT stereo in my car which allows easy navigation of the Music app, including "Recently Added", lists artists, albums, songs etc. over an AVRCP Bluetooth connection.

Since updating from iOS 12 to iOS 13.1.2 I can no longer navigate through the structure of the Apple Music app by pressing the search button on the head unit (it will occasionally get to "Music" but tends to get stuck there and I can no longer move on to "My Music" > "Artists" > "Recently Added" etc.). I had previously been able to do this over Bluetooth (AVRCP) and without being connected by a cable.

I noticed that on iOS 12, when initially connecting via Bluetooth, Apple Music would start playing the first song listed alphabetically, now on iOS 13 it plays a random track. It seems to do this without the app even being open, so in my case with an iPhone 6S when I open the phone to inspect which apps are running by double clicking the home button, the Music app is not there but a random song will be playing anyway. This, I suspect, might be Apple trying to find a way around the common complaint that the same song plays every time a user connects their devices. I also suspect that the random autoplay is somehow affecting the app from listing its contents successfully. Surely there could be a way to control if a song would be played or not when a connection is made?

I have done a factory reset on the head unit and a hard reset on my phone, forgotten the device in the Bluetooth settings.

I now regret upgrading to iOS 13 and I’m also considering swapping my Apple Music family subscription to Spotify as the head unit also supports that.

Any suggestions or similar problems out there?

Thanks for reading.

Update 2:

Tested with an iPhone 6 running iOS 12 last night with no issues, working as my iPhone 6S did before the upgrade to iOS 13

What I find particularly annoying about this is the Pioneers stereo (MVH-390BT) is "Made for iPhone" and supports iPhone 6S:

“Made for iPod” and “Made for iPhone” mean that an electronic accessory has been designed to connect specifically to iPod or iPhone, respectively, and has been certified by the developer to meet Apple performance standards.

This unit supports only the following iPod models. Supported iPod software versions are shown below. Older versions may not be supported.

Made for
–  iPod touch (1st through 6th generation)
–  iPod classic
–  iPod with video
–  iPod nano (1st through 7th
generation)
–  iPhone 6s
–  iPhone 6s Plus
– iPhone 6
– iPhone 6 Plus
–  iPhone 5s
–  iPhone 5c
–  iPhone 5…

Firmware on the head unit is up to date.

Update:

After a bit more testing, it seems flakey now on iOS 13 compared to 12 – once the phone has connected and done its usual autoplay of a randomly picked song, if I double click the home button and quit Music, then try and navigate through the Music app structure I can finally get through to "Artist", "Album", "Song" etc. but once something is playing I now get "No title", "No artist", "No album" being displayed. This wasn't the case before the update.

Update 3:

I've noticed that when the random autoplay is running (without the main app running), if I pause the song I can then navigate through the stucture of the Music library. However, once a song has been selected in this way, trying to navigate in the same way a second time results in a crash. The message "list fail" is displayed on the head unit.

I take it noone from Apple is interested in this as I seem to be the only one replying so far. I was told to come and post here by an Apple support agent.

I've found an article about a similar problem in which the contact sync between the phone running iOS13 and head unit affects the way they work together: https://www.gps-rlink.com/2019/09/25/r-link-2-bluetooth-problem-with-apple-ios13/

Update 4:

Made a clean install of iOS 13. Not much has changed apart from “Messages” (whatever that is, not a song in my library anyway, maybe a message in the app?) trying to be played by the random autoplay (the Music app itself was not running).

Pausing this and then searching via the head unit allowed me to go through Browse > Music > My Music > Recently Added etc. until I’d selected a track to play. During playback, attempting to search for something else in the same way would cause it to crash: it would allow me to go through Browse > “whatever the current song title was” and then crash.
