Installed Catalina on a 2018 Macbook Pro. Ran photos and it has been sitting at :"gathering favorites, detecting duplicates, curating best photos, composing layout, etc." about 30% complete without progress bar moving for the last 30 mins. How long should it take to setup Photo's in Catalina?
Had the same problem. Photos stuck on 80-90 % for 4 days. 45000 photos and about 1100 videos in library. Today a had a little time to do some debugging. Noticed that I had 3 old avi movies in the video library that was not supported (i.e. they would not play). Deleted them from the library and voilá, Photos finished “curating....” in seconds. This worked for both my 2016 Macbook Pro and an older 2012 iMac that both had been stuck at the same percentage for 4 days. How I wish Apple would just put up an error message and tell me which files are the problem...
is that a question or they told you so?

If anyone is wondering, 10.15.4 update did not solve this problem (as it happened with 10.15.3)
It is a same that this still occurs on newest versions of macos.
addendum: not 1 gb, 100 gb I meant to say for the photo database.
ugh. Photo still crashes. I give up, until the next update, which I hope is soon.
For goodness sake, why is it so difficult to update only to have Photos not able to finish...it has been hours and tons of quitting and restarting...urghhh!!!
It is causing the same problem on my iMac. Really painful. I was a happy user on Aperture and starting to hate the Photos... grrrrrr

How do you find these files though? Scroll through and try each video...?
ME TOO! And, I'm not happy.
In search, I typed in "avi" and 3 turned up so I downloaded them into a desktop folder and deleted them in photos to see if I have success.
I have developed 2 Safaris after updates and it has definitely affected my photos. Is there something I need to do to maintain my ability to share photos on social media from a MacBook Air (11-in.)
I've pretty much had it w/ photos. Too much wasted time and energy. Each migration is a complete pain, and I simply don't trust all my precious photos anymore in these giant fragile libraries. Has anyone started just routinely exporting and using "something else" (or importing directly) to manage picture and video collections?? Would love to hear some OPTIONS because I honestly don't really see this improving... Maybe a program that actually stores the files in a sensible structure where I could get tot them directly If desired (I know.. I know, not the Apple way), versus hoping the library doesn't get corrupted one day and I have to go file fishing.
Hi! I have a 2018 MBP and I have been suffering this for 8+ hours, even after 2 reboots. My library is on an external drive (+250GB), but it still does not seem to be moving very quickly. I can still use Photos, but it is so slow it is almost not worth it.
Restarted like the post below- still stuck around 30% processed. Closed Photos, opened Activity Monitor forced quit both photoanalysisd and photolibraryd processes. Restarted Photos and it finished processing within 30 seconds.
