Photo's stuck on Catalina?

Installed Catalina on a 2018 Macbook Pro. Ran photos and it has been sitting at :"gathering favorites, detecting duplicates, curating best photos, composing layout, etc." about 30% complete without progress bar moving for the last 30 mins. How long should it take to setup Photo's in Catalina?

Come on Apple. If the curation process is getting hung up on a particular photo please move it to a special folder labeled "Unable to Curate" and be done with it. Waiting days for curation to complete without knowing why the delay is irresponsible on your part.

Thanks for your tips, MutantSquid! Just wondering if you happen to know if importing is not possible during the "curating" process? I can't import from my camera's SD card into Photos my MacBook Pro. It's the same SD card that's worked previously. Now, the Photos program recognizes the card, but it doesn't show any photo thumbnails for me to select and import anymore. I can find the jpg files through Finder and drag them to photos, but still nothing happens.

Thanks!

OK world....very frustrating all this waiting around for apple photo to sort its self out, I will share one tip tho, I have been using a MacBook for years and keep all me data and photos on the external drive which goes between work and home.

Curation was very slow so was booting up the photo app.....so i invested in a 2 tb SSD external drive, now photos loads really fast, curation has finished, faces still to finalise however 40,000 photos and 8,000 vid clips.

Also photos app can be closed completely for the photanalized to work in the background.

After updating to Catalina on my iMac and attempting to restore my Photos Library, my 95,000 photographs stopped uploading with around 3,200 pictures left. The answer for my problem was in an Apple Toolbox article which suggested I sign out of my iCloud account and then sign back in. This worked for me! The only caveat I have is that in order to sign back in to your iCloud account you will need your Apple ID and login password. This might be problematic as there are instances when folks entering their Apple password discover that it is not "recognized." I had to enter my password in three times before I was allowed back into my account. This has also happened to me in the past and eventually I had to resort to changing my password to gain access. You can read the Apple Toolbox article here: https://appletoolbox.com/how-to-sign-in-and-sign-out-of-icloud-on-macos-catalina/

I hope this helps!

Good day.... well Apple does not make it clear ... but I to have left it ope, minimised, and closed completely , what I did do was open photos then activity monitor, search photo then you can see the prossessers working.... when you then close photo you can clearly see the photoanalizer keeps working... just to let you know after weeks it’s still trying to update faces but it is getting there... as others say when fully finished and working it should be a bloody good app... good luck

Thanks. I also looked at the process and it seems to be running irrespective of the Photos app being open or closed. It is just that my progress bar has been stuck at a very low level for nearly 3 weeks now. It has not moved at all. And I keep the Mac powered on all the time. Not so sure about a bloody good app though :-) I wouldn't go that far.

I went to look at the People album. I looked at a couple of people, then Photos crashed when I opened the third person. I re-opened Photos and the app recovered without restoring from scratch. A report was sent to Apple but I am not sure this is very useful. And the progress bar was still stuck with nothing happening. So I am trying again. I deleted the photo library. Emptied the waste basket. Waited a couple of hours. Created a new one. Made it the system library. And triggered a restore from iCloud again. Last time took nearly 3 weeks so I will be posting an update in 3 weeks.

If your progress bar is not moving when "uploading" your photos from iCloud, then I suggest reading the following TWO articles from Apple ToolBox. The first article talks about issues with iCloud and Photos, and ways to fix them on an iPhone. (although it outlines the steps for an iPhone, you can take similar steps on an iMac - just google the steps for an iMac). The second article is the steps I used to solve the stuck progress bar (it was stuck on 95% complete and 3,200 photos left to upload on my iMac). Briefly, the procedure was to quit Photos, sign out of iCloud, sign back in to iCloud and then restart Photos. This process gives you a "thorough reboot" of the iCloud software. NOTE: If you quit iCloud and restart it, you will be asked for your Apple login ID and password. Some folks have had problems logging back in to iCloud (password not recognized error). I had to log in 3 times before I was "recognized." Once I reopened Photos my photographs finished uploading to my iMac.

Finally- I have been trying for one month. I am not sure I can say what did it but I did the following based on others notes. Most photo’s are on iCloud and my Mac.

1) I had the same appleID on two accounts on my MAC. I signed out of one I do not really use.

2). I still could not get the photos to check off under I Cloud on the other account. So I signed out of the other account. I restarted my computer and logged back in.

3) I believe those two things did it, but I also emptied out all the items in my trash. I am not sure that had an impact but if the first two do not work try it.

i was then able to convert the library in one hour. Good luck.

I'm at the redownload entire library from cloud step. My library is about 95000 pics, 10000 videos, total of 1.7 TB.

I think about 1.58TB has downloaded from cloud somewhat quickly (48 hours) but I'm stuck at "Downloading 410 items" message. When I look at activity monitor I don't see much going on.

When I click on the People folder it shows that about 43% of my library has been scanned. Can I expect the download progress to pick up once the library has been scanned in its entirety? Just seems weird to be hanging up on so the last 4% of my library (410 items)

Further, if face analysis occurs only when the app is close (Photos on my mac), should I keep the app closed for now and if so will that halt the "download" of remaining 410 items?
