iMac keeps crashing after Catalina upgrade

I have a 2019 iMac (Core i9, 64GB of RAM, Radeon Pro Vega 48, 2TB SSD) that I upgraded to Catalina. I thought everything was working fine until I stepped away from my computer for about half an hour and came back to the log in screen; upon logging in, it said my computer had restarted. Submitted the crash report to Apple. I thought it was a glitch. Kept working, then later on, same thing happened. Stepped away, and came back to the same thing. Submitted the crash report to Apple again. Then it happened again. And again. And again. Today, same thing; computer keeps crashing, over and over and over.

I've changed nothing in terms of hardware or software between yesterday and today (or since I set up this iMac a few months ago), except for upgrading to Catalina. Under Mojave, there were no issues.

If anyone has any idea how to resolve this, that would be greatly appreciated!

Below is one of the many, many crash reports, but they all look similar in terms of it seeming to be related to com.apple.WindowServer:

I may have complex solution for the fix but so far, it's the only one that works and right now it has proven to be worth it. Please reference my solution back to here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250717203?answerId=251436830022#251436830022

I have been having the same exact issue with my 2018 MacBook Air and I still have yet to update my 2019 iMac. (If you wonder why I have so many computers, I have a business and a small staff.)

I'm about ready to perform the fix to my 2018 MacBook Air. The difference with the issue on this computer is that most of the time, it's not connected to a monitor but every time the lid is closed, it crashes whenever it is opened. This has been happening since the Catalina upgrade AND update.

If I notice the same success with this, I will proceed with the fix for the 2019 iMac desktop. I will post my results when completed.

I was able to solve my issue with my 2019 iMac by unseating the OWC (third party) RAM I had installed and then re-installing MacOS by holding 'D' when I turned the machine back on and followed the prompts to do so. It didn't wipe any of my data and fixed my issue. Sharing in case this helps anyone else! It was 100% related to my third party RAM because when I took it out (keeping it out) and booted it up, I had no crashes. Now I have all 40GB in there and it's working seamlessly.

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/mac-help/mchlp1599/mac (the article recommends a different set of keys, which didn't work for me. by holding 'D', I was able to boot into the special software, exit single user Safari and run 'Reinstall MacOS'. But I'm posting the article so you can read their official article on how to reinstall MacOS.

Just make sure to re-seat the RAM if you have third-party RAM installed.

I hope this helps!

I pasted a chunk of text into a Word document (Word 2019, no updates available), then tried to select it with my trackpad. Both restarts today are from this same action. I had some other apps (R, iTunes, Excel, Mail) open, too, but I wasn't running code at the time. Also, I am running 10.15.1, but only installed Catalina with this version, never 10.15.0

Try the 'switch off sleep' fix and see if that helps. Some other suggestions are given below (and some of the 'switch off sleep' ones).

Go here to find out about downgrades: https://youtu.be/plgOsDEhgqE

Here is a brief mention of the Time machine back-up changes: "Apple decided to change the extension on the Time Machine backup file to .backupbundle. The only thing I did to be able to use my Time Machine backup is change the extension back to .sparsebundle. After this, the backup showed up and I was able to restore from this Time Machine backup."

Suggestion about Bluetooth options: "I unchecked the option to allow bluetooth devices to wakeup my iMac (bluetooth > open bluetooth preferences > advanced > uncheck the box "allow bluetooth devices to wake this computer")."

"You think that you've eliminated all 32-bit code from your computer, then you find 64-bit apps and drivers that use 32-bit code. Run Go64. Nuf Sed. Deep dive on the permissions solves some problems too."

Make sure your

settings >> Power Saver >>

  1. "Put Hard Disks to sleep when possible" is NOT checked
  2. Turn display off after: set to "Never"
  3. Enable Power Nap: checked

I'm running a late 2013 Mac Pro (trashcan) and also have had this issue every day (many reports submitted to Apple) since upgrading. However, yesterday, I upgraded to 10.15.2 (Beta) and for the first time since upgrading to Catalina, the machine didn't crash overnight. For those who are really suffering, it may be worth joining the Apple Beta program and seeing if it helps you too.

Same issue here. Because of all the reported issues with Catalina, I held off on installing it until the next major version (15.1) was released. That was a mistake. Now my computer crashes every time it goes into sleep mode, without fail. My remedy has been to literally shut down the laptop whenever I'm not using it.

MacOS 15.1

I upgraded to Catalina (2017 27" iMac with no external monitors) and had no issues. 10.15.1 also had no issues, but when I went to 10.15.2 the issue began. I have restored to 10.15.1. and now 10.15 and the issues persists. Error message attached. I chatted with Apple and I have to call back tomorrow to go elevated service. Not holding my breath. I may go back to Mojave, I still have a restore point I can go to.

I upgraded to Catalina and my MacPro keeps crashing when put into sleep mode connected to LG 5k monitor. So far the MacOS was reinstalled at the Apple store and the issue still occurred. MacPro was shipped to Apple and the logic board was replaced with 10.15.2 installed and my Mac still crashes. Apple has run diagnostics twice on my machine and it appears to be fine.

I do not believe Apple is doing long term testing of Mac's connected to external monitors:(
