macos catalina keeps restarting my computer

As soon as I updated to Catalina on my MacBook Air (2012) my computer started restarting because of a problem when I left it for a while. I took it to the Apple store and they said it was a problem with Catalina and that the restarts would get more and more frequent until the computer was trapped in the restart cycle. They took Catalina off and I went back to Mojave, and the restarts stopped. They said to wait, that the bug fixes and updates would fix it. Now we’re at 15.4, and I don’t think it’s fixed yet. I suggest going back to Mojave and just not updating.

Found a simple answer to this otherwise complicated problem - from one of the responses on this site.

Opened my CleanMyMac X, chose Malware Removal. After a few minutes it reported all malware removed.

Son of a gun. It was done. Wish I'd thought to do that days ago

@xtoph-pha; completely agree with you; must be software; even myself I have experienced quite few "panic messages" on MacBook 16' with different configurations, furthermore I have read hundred of comments (to include YouTube reviews, since Dec 19) in relation to "your computer restarted ..."; the notorious message appears after "sleep", this seems common for all, different machines/different configurations, different applications. Difficult to find the line which connects all of us, but my sense is that we are all "victim" of Catalina 10.15.4. Apple is working on the new release, it should come soon; they will get it fixed. I can guarantee that the reset of SMC, ..VRAM ..is just waste of time. I hope it helps.

I tried the suggestion by @dbgfede last night where I turned off enable power nap and my computer did NOT restart last night. So while I'm cautiously optimistic, I'm also pretty sure everyone on this forum knows that one night doesn't mean much. I'll update after a few more nights with power nap off.

I have the same problem with a similar looking error message.

Every morning when I wake my imac..."Your computer was restarted because of a problem".

I'm going try updating from Catalina 10.15.1 to .2 and see if it fixes it.

There are 2 ways I've dealt with this problem. 1) is doing a forced shut down by holding down the power button (not a good way to shut down) and 2) Restart into safe mode (Shift key down), then shut down from within safe mode. It's an extra step but at least it works.

I have also experienced the problem of misterious rebooting for 3-4 days after waking up the machine (iMac 2015). Never before. First time I thought it had some connection with the bluetooth tools (keyboard & trackpad). Both were at 0%, so I just put them on wire to charge, and after reboot everything was fine. Now, today, neither tools was at 0% (94% and 35%), though after the multilanguage screen of reboot, the bluetooth switched off itself, and I tried to connect both keyboard and trackpad in vain, the machine seemed freezing. So I held the switch on/off button to shut down. Then after restarting, now it is fine again. So I believe this problem (in my case at least) has something to do with the bluetooth tools.

Shutting down after safe restart seems to have worked for me too. Why is this necessary though?

I'm having a similar problem. I quit all of my apps with no problems, and shut down. Later, I notice my iMac has started up with the "Your computer restarted because of a problem" error. It doesn't happen immediately, since it's been happening, I've been waiting to see if it restarts.

I suspect Apple is aware of the bug already but it is not a bad idea to send a message to support@apple.com and make sure they are aware

my macbook had not had issues so far and it wakes from sleep fine, reboots fine, shuts down fine ect. Does not seem to be sensitive to any apps running,

I have a MacBook Pro 2017.

it gets restarted (with the message that comes in many languages saying: "you computer was restarted because of a problem") constantly after I upgraded to Catalina, I erased my mac and reinstalled the latest Catalina version but everything is as before!

the strange thing is that restarting happened even before I installed any third party applications!

is it possible that my mac is not compatible with Catalina? I was not experiencing this problem when I had Mojave.

I thought I solved the issue as well. I moved my external Super Drive from the USB port to the Lightning USB3 port and the issue went away . . . for about 4 days. Now its back !! A shame Apple can't address this issue. Would have expected more out of Apple from a $2,500 computer.
