I have a MacBook Pro 2017.

it gets restarted (with the message that comes in many languages saying: "you computer was restarted because of a problem") constantly after I upgraded to Catalina, I erased my mac and reinstalled the latest Catalina version but everything is as before!

the strange thing is that restarting happened even before I installed any third party applications!

is it possible that my mac is not compatible with Catalina? I was not experiencing this problem when I had Mojave.

This seems to be a common problem. See other threads about this. Both my MacBook Pro (2014) and my i9 iMac (2019) which is a month old is doing this. Restarting in sleep and error message. I keep sending it to Apple, maybe one day they will sort it out.

I have no fix for this. Tried resetting, safe mode, various key combinations etc. Does not seem to help.

Catalina seems to be faulty....?

I had the same problem since i upgraded my old Macbook Air 13'', to Catalina at December.

At January i ordered and received my new 16''Macbook Pro and i experienced the same problem. My machine was restarting suddenly during the night or long time of inactivity.

A detail of high importance: The problems appeared as soon as i migrated my old system (settings, files, apps etc) to my new machine. Last week i tried to uninstall an old version of Caffeine application which was coming from my previous machine but (mysteriously) was working at Catalina. The problem has disappeared for a week now. No restarts at all. Hope it helps.

I have exactly the same isue and your description "with a woof of air" i alse recognize.

Now i'm even on the dev version of Catalina (10.15.5) and still the same problem.

Would be nice that somebody from apple has a solution because this is driving me nuts.

uncontrolled restarts... (in the middle of a upgrade, app, ... i don't see any patern)

Yeah, same here. Seems to be a popular issue with Catallina.

Just got a new MacBook Pro (16 inch, 2.6Ghz, 16 GB RAM) and basically each time I open it from a >1 hour sleep cycle I'm greeted by that same popup. On some days it's happened even 5 times. I keep sending the diagnostic info, hoping someone is paying attention there.

That + each time being greeted by those "xyz needs permission, if you have already given the permission deselect and select again" is driving me crazy.

Please Apple, make the next version of MacOS a bug fix/optimisation update

I recently purchased a iMac2019 and it will sleep then sometimes need to re-start upon waking and give me a long list of an error. Something about "Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while calling power state change callbacks.....etc...""

I contacted apple support and they said to reset SMC (Which I did) then operate in safe mode. If it happens again in the regular mode, then reinstall the macOS for macOS recovery? Should I do that? or is this something that is wrong with Catalina and eventually there will be a fix?

Thanks

thank you for asking; will return the MacBook as this is not acceptable. same issue this morning, computer restarted because of a problem, frustrating. panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff8015216487): "AppleIntelFramebuffer::setPowerState(0xffffff81c442b000 : 0xffffff7f987c8d88, 1 -> 0) timed out after 45949 ms"@/AppleInternal/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/xnu/xnu-6153.101.6/iokit/Kernel/IOServicePM.cpp:5296....

Latest update 10.15.4 seems to have helped slightly. I'm getting less restarts it seems. Haven't noticed any "xyz needs permission" popups anymore so at least that's something.

Only major annoyance right now is that my laptop is mostly docked and on some mornings it won't wake up no matter how hard I mash on the external keyboard or mouse. I need to remove the laptop from the dock, open it and press the power button. In majority of those cases I am again greeted by the notorious "restarted due to a problem" message, but the "doesn't wake up" thing seems to be a separate issue and the update may not be the safest also as outlined here -> https://www.tomsguide.com/news/nasty-macos-flaw-is-bricking-macbooks-dont-install-this-update

If anyone is wondering - I'm not using any fancy docking stations, it's just a thunderbolt to 2x hdmi adapter + a basic usb-c to usb-a adapter for the peripherals. The restarts are also happening without any accessories connected, just my desk setup isn't the greatest right now, so getting the laptop out from the jumble of wires and opening it to turn it on is a slight pain

@dbgfede hope the reinstall works for you, but from what I've seen in other threads it seems to be a 50/50 shot, so I'll just bite the bullet and keep hoping for some update from Apple. It hasn't impacted my work and I haven't lost any files (yet) so right now this whole thing is just a slight annoyance/ritual each time I open the laptop.

As soon as I updated to Catalina on my MacBook Air (2012) my computer started restarting because of a problem when I left it for a while. I took it to the Apple store and they said it was a problem with Catalina and that the restarts would get more and more frequent until the computer was trapped in the restart cycle. They took Catalina off and I went back to Mojave, and the restarts stopped. They said to wait, that the bug fixes and updates would fix it. Now we’re at 15.4, and I don’t think it’s fixed yet. I suggest going back to Mojave and just not updating.

@Joelle75 - got the same issue on my new MacBook 16; first I have gone through the reset of the SMC. No success. Then, I have reinstalled Catalina 10.15.4 , and now apparently no panic messages "restart because of a problem".

I am quite curios on the "with a woof of air", what is exactly, is something related to the reset of the SMC? Thanks

Apr 19, 2020 10:00 AM in response to GreenBadger

I have, first, (1) reset the SMC, even if it was quite unclear to me the process itself, then, no wait, (2) I have downloaded Catalina from Apple Store, reinstalled the Catalina (download and reinstall right away).

Left the MacBook16i9 on "sleep" (8 hours, the whole night), then, with my surprise (in the morning) no mistakes (i.e. restart due to a problem...panic). Seems it works now.

I hope that I have answered your question.
