MacOs Catalina and Notability Issues

Is anyone else having issues with notability causing your macbook to overheat and drain the battery after updating to MacOs Catalina? I already submitted a request to notability to look at this but I just wanted to see if it was an isolated problem on my end or if other people are having this issue as well.

Finally got a reply from Notability! Here's what they said:

"Thanks for getting in touch and sorry for the trouble! We recently introduced Document Scanning which may take more effort than usual, while your previous images index, so it may drain the battery faster than normal and make your device warm. Once all of your images have been processed, though, things should return to normal.

Please let us know if things haven't settled down, and we can investigate further."

Soo considering I have 700 lectures on notability, I got a feeling this is gonna take a while. I think I might just plug in my macbook overnight and let it run its course (probably gonna have to pop open my window to help keep it cool). I think I'll give it a shot tonight and let u know how it is tomorrow. Really hoping that this is the solution...

I'm experiencing the exact same issue now!! My macbook pro has been working perfectly until today I updated to catalina. I'm running Notability on catalina and there are quite a few problems:

  • kills battery life (normally my macbook lasts 8+ hours of working, now it only takes 2.5 hours to reduced to 50%)
  • quits expectedly all the time
  • mac becomes overheated
  • noisy fans

I took my macbook pro to a store today and there is nothing wrong with neither software nor hardware. The staffs said the only thing I could do is to keep an eye on Activity Monitor, in case any CPU information goes strange, then wait for updates from app developers and Apple. Hope this helps you a bit, you are not the only one having these issues!

They did get back to me. I posted their response on here but it probably got buried in all the comments so I’ll just copy and paste it again:

So what I ended up doing was just leaving my laptop on overnight (plugged in) and just let notability do its thing. By the next morning, everything was back to normal! I had to do this with my ipad too. No more overheating, lagging, etc when running notability!

Hello, I had the same issues and removed everything and re downloaded everything with Catalina. I did get stuck in a loop with the website not being able to trust the website. After retrying multiple times I finally was able to get my 2019 MacBook Pro 15 inch laptop back up and running. It’s now back to running normal. I just got this one on 10/15 and waited for the download due to previous 2019 MacBook Pro doing the same thing. This is my 3rd laptop and I really like it but needed to know it was a software issue and not a hardware issue. Returned the other two and finally realized it was Catalina. So, re downloading will help it go back to normal.

I don’t use Notability but I have Catalina on a 2019 MBP and have the same issues as being described here.

Store says the computer is fine and sending it in would either result in them saying no issues found or a good faith battery replacement.

normally you’d never hear the fan run. Now you do and it continues to run and almost never stops. Even runs after I boot it up and go to desktop.

it dropped today from 80ish% to 5% in an instant. First time it did that since upgrading.

not an app issue, it’s a Catalina issue. Too focused on new stuff, and caused many more problems, just like iOS. Poor quality control especially for a brand new computer with Catalina

checked activity monitor and nothing shows as abnormal on any aspect.

I am having the exact same issue - with both my 2015 MacBook Air and my 2 month old MacBook Pro. Everything else the same, only change is Catalina and my battery life went from 7-9 hours on the new laptop to 1-3 and from 5-6 hours on my trusty friend to 1-3. I've spent +-15 hours with Apple Support with my case escalated and with each phone call comes new ideas which take so much time and produce no results. I'm tempted to quit trying, work tethered to a power outlet and wait for developers to fix this. UGGGHHHHH!!!!!!
