Today I found a method to resolve this issue .

First, on the MacBook ,create a folder in iCloud drive and copy all the epub ebooks into this folder .

Then , use iPhone  tap “File” and find the folder which was created just now .

Open that folder and tap the epub files, the ebook will be opened by iBooks app . When the ebook was opened , the cover page can be displayed correctly on iPhone . At the same time , the ebook can be synchronized with MacBook iBook app , and the cover page can be displayed correctly too on the Mackbook.

It seems that epub ebooks can be synchronized correctly from iPhone to MacBook , but incorrect from MacBook to iPhone , maybe this is a bug of macOS Catalina.

I do fully agree. With high hopes I installed the 13.4 and 10.15.4 updates across all regarding devices, just to be disappointed again, because the problem persists.

The worst part: If one of the devices gets low on free storage the book cover cache of the Book apps will be purged. If subsequently more storage is freed again, the missing covers won't be replaced.

Manually deleting and re-adding the books one at a time is user hostile.

They never will. There’s no reason to do it. Just to make us happy isn’t good enough a reason for them to spend the time and effort. Also they are trying really really hard to transition into services, but keep stumbling. So why bother? Stuff we buy from them will load just fine. It’s stuff from other sources that won’t work. So, the math is very simple.

It is really a hard work to import more than 2000 books into the Apple books app and it is hard to read them all either. But , if we think different, books are used to be read not to be stored. We can import 5-10 books once before read them , when finished , import 5-10 more again.

It is helpful for us to focus on the books what we are going to read instead of browsing with thousands of books to pick up the book you want to read.

Other books which we do not read soon , put them in computer or hard disk.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Most ebooks take up very little storage and it is very useful to keep them around for reference, especially if you don't read fiction at all. I have a lot of design and programming related books, which you rarely read cover to cover. I also keep business and popular science (cognitive psychology, perception etc.) books in Apple Books and find myself often browsing the library.

I am a very visual person and the covers are a huge help to remember what excerpts I read and what other chapters I saw when skimming and browsing the table of contents.

Despite my book collection being smaller than 2000 it is still large enough to not justify a manual import one book at a time. I still invested the endless hours doing exactly this in December, because this bug annoyed me that much. However, after a recent reboot of my iPhone the entire library's cover art got removed again, didn't reload properly and now half of the books again show only the generic covers, which are useless to me.
