I was having this problem on a 15" MBP 2019 with the Pro Vega 20, then again on the 16" 2019 MBP with the 8GB Radeon I swapped it for.

Basically, your Catalina install comes with a bunch of extensions for running RAID hard drives (most users won't ever do this). Something about at least one of them is broken. I haven't worked out exactly which ones cause the problem, but they can all be safely removed if you don't use RAID HDDs.

They can be found in MacintoshHD>Library>Extensions. Make sure you're looking the right right Library folder, you want the one on in Macintosh HD, NOT the one under your username. I made a backup of them just in case, then cleared out the following .kext files:

ACS6x

ArcMSR

ATTOCelerityFC8

ATTOExpressSASHBA2

ATTOExpressSASRAID2

CalDigitHDProDrv

HighPointIOP

HighPointRR

PromiseSTEX

SoftRAID

Since I was on a very fresh install, I expect these are all the ones which come with Catalina as standard. My machine has since been waking from sleep successfully and quickly every time, even with multiple displays and USB-C devices plugged in.

Today I Re-install Catalina not a fresh one (erasing disk), but using and internet install to refresh the OS, and even before that I delete the Cleanmymac X suspecting that was having or causing problems. After a wile the problem persist. Browsers stop navigating pages and mail did no show content, the wired situation when this happen is that previous page continue to navigate (Page that was already open) but no new page. Microsoft Teams continue working, also other apps even native one as news, etc But browsers (Safari and Chrome) and apple mail did not, even weird that Microsoft Outlook continues working es very annoying and weird. I also supected of Avast was blocking traffic but I have other two machines that are working fine, only the Mac Book Pro 15 Inch 2017 Mac OS 10.15.2

It’s not an OWC-specific problem. I have a bus-powered USB Toshiba Canvio drive being used for Time Machine that appears to be causing my sleep crashes/restarts. When I swapped the Toshiba for a powered (i.e., wall outlet) OWC Mercury Elite Pro (also connected to a USB port), the crashes stop. Although it’s possible that the drive or its hardware interface is failing and causing the crashes (I’ve already tried a different cable and different USB ports), the problems began when I upgraded from Mohave.

The update to Catalina 10.15.3 has had no effect. I’ve been working with an Apple Senior Advisor on this for weeks. Still waiting to hear back from Engineering about the data they’ve collected from my iMac.

I took my mid 2015 MBP into the shop again for diagnostics. It passed and they did another fresh install of the latest version of Catalina. I brought it home this last Saturday (Feb. 8th), plugged in the power, went through the fresh install config and mostly left it alone. I chose not to restore anything from my Time Machine back, I wanted to see how Catalina would behave in a fresh state. Largely because I’ve lost trust in macOS’ stability for day to day use.

Last night I closed the top/screen and let it sleep overnight. When I opened the top/screen it was unresponsive. However, the bottom was warm and I could hear the whir of a fan. I held the power button down until the whirring stopped, waited a few seconds, and then powered it up again. I was greeted by the 'something bad happened' screen and proceed to reboot.

Looks like Catalina 10.15.3 still has what ever this mysterious sleep crash problem is. This whole experience has soured me on Apple and started an investigation into a laptop to run Linux on.

Update 2/20/20: I had to wait about 10-14 days, but I finally had another kernel panic and restart. I’ve eliminated obvious hardware issues EXCEPT my external Toshiba Canvio (bus-powered), so I’m returning it to them for replacement and temporarily switching to a powered external drive for Time Machine backups. I’ll update again if I experience any panics with this setup or when I’ve received/tested the replacement Canvio.

I have a mid 2017 iMac 27” and have been having issues since purchase with external USB 3.0 storage causing the sleepwakefailure crashes as per this thread. I recently purchased a Samsung T5 Mini usb-c SSD which worked fine until the last 10.15.4 update (mentioning usb-c fixes).

Since applying this the issue has returned, but with USB-C the ports on the Mac stop working completely (power light comes on on the drive but drive is not seen) until the computer is power cycled which brings them back. If I connect the drive with USB-A while this is happening it works, but the computer still crashes with sleepwakefailure or very occasionally a kernel panic.

Same issue with a 2019 16" MacBook Pro. The laptop will immediate have a blank display (keyboard lights stay on) when I try to go to sleep AND have my Dell P2720DC external monitor plugged in. Laptop goes to sleep fine if the monitor is not plugged in.

Tried the following and no luck:

  1. Reset SMC
  2. Tried connecting USB-C on monitor to Thunderbolt: Does not work.
  3. Tried connecting HDMI to USB-C hub --> Thunderbolt: Does not work.
  4. Tried connecting HDMI to HDMI-->USB-C adapter --> Thunderbolt: Does not work.

I am on Catalina 10.15.5

UPDATE

With recent OS updates, my crashes are less frequent. Originally, it was thought that my bus-powered USB drive on my 2017 iMac was the culprit for my Catalina/sleep-related kernel panics, so I replaced it with another drive. No change.

Then Apple Engineering said they were sure it was memory related, so I had OWC replace their new 16GB of RAM with another pair. So far, I've tested with only the original pair of Apple RAM (total 8GB), only with the OWC 16GB, and with both sets in both positions. And yet the kernel panics continue. As mentioned, the only good news is that they're less frequent. I went 11 days between crashes this time. Still unacceptable and a complete mystery, but an improvement. Unless I have some other undiagnosed hardware issue, I still think Catalina is the culprit.
