Hi GavinFoo,
Thanks for posting! I understand you might be having an issue with waking your MacBook Pro from sleep, and I'm glad to help.
To troubleshoot, I recommend starting with this resource: If your Mac doesn't sleep or wake when expected
"If your Mac doesn't wake when you expect
Your Mac might pause a few seconds before it wakes up. If it doesn't seem to wake at all, check for these possibilities:
If this doesn't seem to apply to what's happening, try these troubleshooting steps below. Safe mode and the test user account in particular may be helpful in narrowing down the issue:

These additional steps may help identify or resolve the issue:

My 2016 MacBook Pro hasn't had sleep-related crashes over two weeks now after I turned power off of external OWC Thunderbay. I also have HDMI via CalDigit's Thunderdock's miniDisplay to HDMI adapter to 40" 4k Samsung TV but it doesn't cause sleep crashes. I didn't need to move extension files.
OWC company has been in loop with me and they are bringing reproducible physical devices to Apple. We should have some fixes soon. Yay!
For other issues of sleep crashing that some of you experienced, I suggest to contact Apple directly and hope they have enough info to have fixes.
Catalina 10.15.2 did not fix the issue for me either. Finally ended up downgrading back to Mojave and haven't had a problem since. Frustrating because I would like to use Catalina so I can use Sidecar with my iPad Pro...
Hi, finally yesterday i solved the problem with the most easy way.
I back for the previous OS, Mojave.
So i needed to know that it works perfectly, so i led the macbook pro staying all night on in sleep mode. So, few minutes ago i tested if it'll crashes again. And it works perfect.
So in my experience to save time and worries, return to the previous OS till Apple fix all errors in Catalina OS.
Yes, I find this truly remarkable that apple isn't engaged in this situation at all. It really makes me think twice about purchasing another apple product. Catalina sucks and their lack of engagement in fixing it is worse. I HATE PC products, but I'm getting close to needing to replace my laptop and truly considering other products out there. You can get more bells and whistles for your money.
Hi everybody,
I might have solved my sleep crash issue. Three days without problems so far, so I'm cautiously optimistic.
If you also experience mostly browser related crashes, even after a clean install (see my previous post), you might want to try the following:
1) Test if the issue also happens in safe mode (restart holding the shift key, open some programs, let your Mac go to sleep, wait for a bit, wake it up). If you cannot reproduce the crash in safe mode, you might be lucky and the next two steps will do the trick for you.
2) Now restart in regular mode and reset your network settings (https://macreports.com/how-to-reset-network-settings-on-mac/). I used "Method 2" from the linked article. Don't forget the backup.
3) Uninstall or deactivate your network security/virus scanner app(s), one by one if you have several running, and see if the issue still occurs. In my case the culprit was AVG Antivirus. Never thought of it because it never caused any problems prior to Catalina. As soon as the app was gone, no more crashes.
I hope this works for you, too.
Catalina is the most in-stable OS since I switched from Windows to Mac 10 years ago. And I totally regret the update to it. Previous Moave just was fine. It is so bad that the software of the OS quality is made with such a low quality awareness. I wish I could get rid of the crappy OS made by programmer apprentice. It is not to understand: They control everything, from screws to components to drivers, but they are more and more not able to deliver stable releases. Apple more and more turns from a cool company to an something annoying like Microsoft. I guess this is not the engineers fault, more than this is it a lack of quality awareness by the management.
I am having same issue
Catalina 10.15.2
MBP2015
I am o XCode 11.13.1
I noticed this happening when I have Google Chrome open, not always but after couple to Chrome tabs open, it starts happening. So, I uninstalled Chrome, reinstalled it, stopped it from starting automatically on log on and switched to Firefox.
I have not noticed it since I did that (2-3 days ago), however, if I go to Google Maps on Firefax, it freezes my machine again.
The only way to unfreeze is to press and hold power button and force restart that way.
Been having this kernel panic about 3-4 times a day, which has seriously killed productivity. I think I came up with a temporary fix, potentially. It's only been 24 hours, but disabling Powernap on battery power + AC power seemed to have stopped the crashing. I figured this might be the case because I noticed that I was only getting the panics while connected to AC, and Powernap was only turned on when connected to AC.
Update 4: Okay, I am pleased to report that I have gone over a week now with no more crashing while sleeping on my 2019 MacBook Pro 16 inch running macOS Catalina v10.15.2 (19C57). I elected to start from scratch 9 days ago, by doing a complete disk erase and fresh Catalina installation. This go-round I elected NOT to do a Migration from my old 2013 MacBook Pro running High Sierra, relying on the cloud instead. So far, knock wood, this approach seems to have defeated whatever was my culprit.
In my case my system would almost always crash after sleeping overnight or after an hour or so or more in sleep mode.
Hope this is helpful to anyone visiting here. Good luck!
Well I finally got fed up and erased the disk and gone back to Mojave.
I will wait for another two releases of Catalina before trying it again.
However, erasing the disk and a clean install of Catalina did reduce the crashes significantly but not enough. I still believe that this is something to do with the power management as that is when the crashes happen if the mac book runs too low on power or out of power and then the next time it starts up it crashes.
Update 5: Okay, I am NOT pleased to report that I experienced my first "new" crash today, 11 days after I did an erase and Catalina reinstallation, previously described. I know that I have added just one new piece of software since that time: "Focusrite Control," version 3.5.0.1754. I expect this is not a common app on this thread so maybe this isn't very helpful but I thought I should update my record here anyway. I'll touch base with Apple and Focusrite to see if I can learn anything helpful. All for now. ~k
Update 6: I reached out to Apple and Focusrite on the topic of my newly-installed Focusrite Control app I associate with renewed crashing while sleeping. There seems to be some "kernal panic" history here so I have been advised to review this following article, which also links to a step-by-step YouTube instructional video.
How do I Delete my Audio Preferences on Mac OS X?
*Please note that if you do not feel comfortable with the outlined steps or encounter any errors during the process, please do not proceed. At this stage, we would suggest contacting an Apple specialist for further assistance.
If you are experiencing issues with Audio on Mac OS X, it's a good idea to Trash your Audio Preferences, as it's possible that they may have become corrupt. You need to ensure you empty your trash and restart your Mac after deleting these files.
The issues that can be addressed by this fix are as follows: kernel panics (crashes), glitchy audio, interface not showing in Audio MIDI Setup/Sound.
Make sure to Restart your computer after you empty the Trash. When you do, the Preferences will regenerate themselves with their Default Values.
I'll update again if I learn anything helpful. ~k
I'v decided to go back to Mojave. But Mojave is not able to read the TimeMachine Backup made with Catalina!!! What a mess! Fortunatlly I have all my sources in an external repository and therefor nothing is lost. But to reinstall all necessary programs and setting (Apache, MySql, PHP, Eclipse, WebStorm, PHPStrom, C-cross compiler etc. etc) keeps me locked in a nightmare.
@Apple: Compatibility of a backup is essential and I need to ask you if you are completely mad? I consider to turn for my development agendas to Linux and to use my Mac as a typewriter for mails and docs. But isn't crazy to buy a typewriter for that money? I was so happy for years with my Mac as my main-device. Now I'm suffering more and more on the ignorancy of Apple-managers they are more concerned about the Stock-Market than customer satisfaction. Catalina is the almost deepest point of low quality since years. And what are you planning to do, Apple? An excuse might be a starting point where you are warning NOT to update to Catalina. Shame on you!
Hei Thomas
I also went through the painful process of "retrofit" (correct expression?) my mac. Fortunately not on such a high level of complexity.
It seems to me that apple sort of glitched on a major detail. IF (VERY BIG IF) Catalina gets to work on your mac, it's quite nice.
The weird thing is that those crashes seem to occur without clear pattern (devices, configurations vary).
I could imagine that Catalina is such a big step / causes so much trouble because it may be a sort of preparation to switch away from Intel®?
Anyway, it doesn't help, and the company has left many of its users in the rain.
I have exactly the same issue here. After upgrading to Catalina, my MacbookPro (13 inch 2017 3.5GHz Dual-Core i7) keeps crashing and it seems to be getting worse. I spoke to Apple support when it happened in October and followed the recommended steps like resetting SMS, safe mode, etc. Not much help. I lose wifi connection frequently and keeps seeing the "frozen" rainbow disk right after I sign on to my computer after sleep mode. It has been 3 months and it has been very frustrating. My Macbook had very little issues prior to the update.
If anyone has a good solution - very much appreciate it. But looks like we all have to wait for the Apple engineers to release the update..?
