Mail crashes when trying to open Time Machine since upgrade to Catalina

When attempting to open Time Machine for my primary email address, Mail closes and provides an error message. My iMac has the public version of Catalina installed. Time Machine works fine with lesser used email addresses and when looking for something via Finder. I get the following error message (I've only included the applicable part). Thanks for your insights!

Richard.... I believe you misunderstood my solution. You still can not "Enter Time Machine" while in the Mail App. Mine crashes there as well. My solution, which I got from someone else is to use "FINDER" starting from the Home Folder. Then navigate to the Mail Folders "IN FINDER" then restore the mail box folders you want. You need to read my complete instructions for some things to watch out for.

However, maybe this will not work for your Time Machine Backup if it is located on a Network Storage Device (NAS). Mine is located on a directly attached backup usb drive. If yours is on a network server it might not have the same level of folder structure. But maybe another option similar to what I did.

I completely agree Apple needs to address this. But I simply could not wait and I found a workaround that worked for me and wanted to share with others that require access to older emails.

I've been dealing with this problem as well. It's infuriating. How can a company approve an OS update without knowing how it would effect its own applications? It's unacceptable. Just one more drop in the bucket. In the past couple years, I saw Apple get rid of the aux port on the iPhone, the USB port, and a train wreck release of their newest OS.

This issue was originally reported in October of last year. It's been 4 months and there is still no solution. The problem persists. I've decided it is the beginning of the end for my relationship with Apple.

I reported time machine mail crashing the week that I went live with Catalina on my iMac in October 2019. Apple Support collected a data file from my computer and referred it to engineering. As you have stated the latest version 10.15.3 did not fix the issue. I’m not ready to say they don’t care but it’s not high on their priority to fix obviously.

You should not have to try this hard for them to fix a problem. This problem is well documented and Apple knows about it. They are geniuses at Apple. What's happening here is that this product (Time Machine) is no longer a strategic product of theirs. I'll bet it's discontinued soon and replaced with backup to the cloud, which I will never do. Sorry... but you'd have to be a nut job to place every single file you have out on a single cloud point where just 1 intrusion gives someone access to everything you have.

Nope I made the right decision as I posted over a month ago. After almost 20 years with Apple, and in a post-Steve Jobs Apple, I have switched to Windows. It's not pretty, but my high performance Dell and backup system work perfectly. Didn't have to post anything on a blog to get it working.

After suffering thru decades of Windows hassles going back to the first IBM-PC, those ugly memories are still too painful to give up the 99% trouble-free Apple ecosystem. I know Windows is better today, but none of the ecosystems are trouble-free. I have one problem which, yes, should have been fixed long ago. Apple is not as nimble as in the past, no question. But I back up to the cloud, and two different onsite storage systems, including one in a fireproof safe. The IT rule of thumb is if you are not backing up to three different places, you really aren't backing up. We will see about Time Machine, but it not that, it'll be some other onsite system for me to compliment the cloud. And at the end of the day, save some paper and hard copy, esp. when it comes to financial records. Just a matter of time before either the sunspots or foreign actors decide to disappear our digital data. :)

I gave up trying to make any progress with their support having wasted hours and hours and finally having a "specialist" tell me "I see you're having trouble reading your email" whereupon the line went dead. Along the way I'd had the numerous reports of the identical problem in forums dismissed as "opinions".

Perhaps picking up that thread is a way to while away any impending "self-isolation".

Same results as above. I do get the timeline on the right side of the screen but nothing happens when I click on a date. I've emailed the Apple tech rep who's working with me on this. Suggest others do the same as there's strength in numbers. And yes, very disappointing. Retrieving past files via Finder continues to work properly as it always has although slower, I think.
