How to Fix Blurry Fonts in MacOS Catalina for Non-Retina Displays

How to Fix Blurry Fonts in MacOS Catalina for Non-Retina Displays connected to MacBook Air? Font smoothing is selected in General/SystemPreferences but the fonts on Mail/Safari etc are faint/blurred. There was no problem in Mohave prior to upgrading the OS.

I am having the same issue in my MacBook Pro 2017 model, after upgrading the OS to Catalina. First I noticed blurry fonts while using code editors like VS Code, Atom. So I tried modifying the system defaults 'CGFontRenderingFontSmoothingDisabled' via the terminal, then logged out and logged in again, and the blurry fonts issue gone in the code editors. But could not figure out any way to fix system font issues.

Thanks for your response, but as you correctly say these terminal commands offer only "a partial fix" that is well documented on forums and specialist websites. Even implementing the mildest of smoothing using terminal commands makes very little difference. Mojave and earlier operating systems have thrown up the same issue for other users when released so it is very disappointing that Catalina should have the same issue. Seven years of crystal clear fonts on a 23" monitor with a MacBook Air are replaced by a blurry experience to which no one - or Apple - seems able to offer a crystal clear resolution.
