Scratched watch face

My series 5 stainless steel watch is only 2 weeks old and under a bright light noticed a scratch right across the face of the watch. I have been super careful with the watch . Haven’t knocked it, scraped it or bashed it on anything. I thought the sapphire glass was meant to be tuff? I have another watch (not apple) that I have had for 10 years and it doesn’t have a scratch on it. Could the scratch have been there before I brought it and haven’t noticed it before because haven’t looked that closely? Has anyone else experienced scratches only after 2 weeks of use?

A lot of you are posting pictures of the aluminum model. Those don’t have sapphire, they have Ion-X Glass. It is not scratch resistant. If it seems to be scratching easier than an older aluminum model that you own/owned, perhaps something has changed, who knows.

To the OP and others who have stainless steel models scratching, are you absolutely sure it isn’t just the oleophobic coating? It scratches easily, but can be polished off. There are lots of posts about it on the internet. I’ve had the same happen to me with a couple, it always rubs off eventually. They should just leave that crap off from the get-go.. it’s pointless to use.

I have the same issue. Splashed out on the series 5 stainless steel with Milanese Loop 3 weeks ago thinking the sapphire screen would be bullet proof and already it has several scratches on it. I've been really careful and it's not been knocked or dropped. I've had the series 1,3 & 4 in aluminium in the past and have never seen a scratch on them. Very disappointed after spending the extra on this one.

Me too! I have not been rough or banging against things, in fact I have a broken foot so definitely not getting around, I noticed a very deep scratch on my (2 month old) series 5. I thought it was a crack, no visible impact damage or marks. The shop staff don’t really care, a female assistant stated that she wasn’t the one wearing the watch so couldn’t tell me what materials or circumstances would cause a scratch so deep! I have been given the options to get repaired at a cost of £300, or purchase a new watch at £400, and add on apple care. Prior to purchasing I asked a shop assistant specifically about the screen’s integrity, he advised the screens are very strong and would not be damaged easily. When I think of the money I’ve spent over the years on apple goods. Shocking customer service!

I’ve had the exact same issue. It’s practically brand new. I’m not a very active person and I’m extremely careful with it because I’m so scared of scratches - still within a few days of purchase it was full of tiny scratches around the edges and middle of the screen. Very disappointing as I was assured it wouldn’t scratch easily and so I didn’t bother with a protector.

Since I posted here at the end of January about mine developing scratches after only a couple weeks of use, I can now say the scratches have disappeared! I’m thinking they were just in the screen coating and now after 4 months of daily use and rubbing/cleaning of the screen they’ve worn away. So I’m now quite happy with the sapphire’s scratch resistance. Anyone else found this?

I hear you, I think the quality of the glass isn't up to usual wear and tear like previous versions. I know you have to pay extra to get the same quality and hardness of glass as previous versions from v5 forward. While this is only what I've been told it feels right to me. They do scratch very easily which is a shame as they are a precision product and once damaged they depreciate significantly. Come on Apple you can do it, with future versions, this is not good!

Same thing is happening with my apple watch. It's brand new, titanium, always really careful with it but there's this weird spider web thin scratches appearing all over the screen. I have my iPhone XS Max for a long time now, no scratches but the apple watch, for some unknown reason there's scratch showing up. I wear a jacket to work and it's soft. Is this a defect of the screen? It's really bizarre.

Bought the stainless watch about a month ago. Already it has a similar fine scratch on the screen

despite only everyday normal use. Didn't drop it or anything else unusual. I

have had a Swiss watch with a sapphire screen for 30+ years and NO scratches,

so the Apple sapphire seems to be considerably less durable. I bought the

stainless version specifically for this reason, so pretty disappointing. Apple support seems to just shrug their shoulders and say take it to the store. Guy in the store says, "It's scratch resistant, not scratch proof." Well, based on it what I am reading here and seeing myself, it is not as scratch resistant as typical watch sapphire crystals. I really wonder if these are defective in some way.
