Hi! Had the same problem this morning after having my phone charge through the night. Woke up, screen was black, did not say it was charging wouldnt restart. However, I found something online that said to do the following;

Press volume up button and release

Press volume down button and release

Now hold the power button until the apple logo comes on.

IT WORKED! After trying everything possible for an hour this finally turned on my phone and it was working like nothing ever was wrong with it.

ruq133 has resolved the problem in the 3 months since posting, since they marked the thread as SOLVED.

The CORRECT procedure is:

  • Press and QUICKLY RELEASE the Volume Up button
  • Press and QUICKLY RELEASE the Volume Down button
  • HOLD the Side Button until an Apple logo appears.

This has been posted several times in this thread, and in the linked Apple article as well.

It worked for me too! Just to share my experience. Phone turned off abruptly one night, charged it all night but found it dead in the morning. Charged many hours that day and tried (force restart) a bunch of times. Did other troubleshooting, charger cable, cleaned charger port, etc... I even scheduled an appointment with Apple services. But to my surprise the next morning(today), I tried the force restart again and the iPhone logo appeared! Then it indicated there wasn’t enough battery to power on, so I plugged it in, and in about 5 mins it turned on! So relived!!.. idk what happened, but the force restart worked 2 mornings after finding that my phone would not charge or turn on.

hope this helps others!

Woke up, and my iPhone 11 Pro (which sits on a wireless charging stand overnight) screen was black. Holding power button did nothing. Tried this and it worked, although it took about three to four tries-so be patient. Had to hold the power button down for a few seconds before I finally saw the white apple logo come on. Thank goodness. With all the apple stores closed because of the quarantine, I didn't want to have to wait for a refurb in the mail.

I just expereinced the same issue with my 11 pro max. Charged it last night, it worked when I woke up then shut down or crashed and when I went to use it the screen was black and it was non responsive. Thank you for all of you who suggested a force restart, I didn't know how to on the 11 as I never had to before. My phone is working again, battery is at 100%. This is for sure a software glitch and I certainly hope Apple reads these threads and gets on top of this one fast. This is a big inconvenience and causes alarm where there need not be. Too many of us heavily rely on our phones, thanks to Apple. Please fix this issue!

It’s called an iPhone, but what you really have is a very powerful pocket-sized computer that can also make phone calls. And like any computer it can crash, like Windows BSOD or Mac kernel panic. The best preventative is to restart it yourself periodically, like once a week as described in this support article—>Restart your iPhone - Apple Support which really just says turn it completely off, wait a minute, and turn it back on.

Charging overnight had nothing to do with it. Might have been an app that went crazy that has background app refresh privileges, so review those (in Settings/General) and disable any that you don’t need to be doing things while you are asleep.

If this happens frequently your phone may have an intermittent hardware problem.
