How do I get my computer to shut down completely? It hangs up with the photo of Catalina Island. It will not allow trash to be eliminated either. It just shows that it is doing it, but there is no way to Force Quit. I'm using Catalina.
Unfortunately, the solution has not worked for me. Since upgrading to Catalina I’m running at least 50% of the time when they shut down does not complete properly and I have to force quit using the power switch. It seems rather obvious to me that there is a flaw in the OS somewhere that is causing this.

Not necessarily, it could be program that you are running or process that your iMac is trying to complete in the background.
Programs I'm running? Probably not, since I’m talking about shut downs where all apps are closed except those that always run resident, in which case I would likely have the problem every time.
Mac trying to complete in the background? I’d say 14-plus hours is MORE than enough time for the OS to complete it’s background shut-down activities.
If you installed Catalina over the existing macOS? Then perhaps you need to start over and take a different path.
Completely erase your drive, install macOS Catalina on your drive and then Migrate from your Time Machine during the initial Catalina setup.
I agree. I have the same issue. All apps are shut down prior to choosing 'shut down'. I left mine once for 9 hours and it just sat there until i woke up in the morning and was forced to pull the plug again.
Submit a bug report to Apple about so we can get something done about it.

That is not the cause for me since I always shut down all programs before shutting down. One question: How do I know if I have a T2 chip?
That was already done with the help of Apple Support.
A clean install helped, but it is still an issue. And sometimes the boot process hangs as well.
