Placing cursor middle of word - iOS 13

Does anyone else have issues placing the cursor in the middle of a word to edit with the new iOS 13 update?

It used to be really easy, you just clicked where you wanted the cursor to be... I have no idea why they changed it. I for the life of me couldn't work out how to do it, but found (on another website, not apple's) this explanation:

If your keyboard is currently inactive, just tap wherever you'd like your cursor to go, and it will follow suit. If your cursor is already active, tap the word you want to jump to, which will land the cursor at the beginning or end of the word. Then, long-press the middle of the word, let go, and watch your cursor appear in the middle.

So extra complicated!!

Is there any way to revert this setting, so it was how it was before? Instead of one tap, it's now a tap and a long hold (which is really tricky and glitchy, sometimes the whole word gets highlighted...)

I too was bugged by this but the new way to do it is to let the cursor know you want to edit mid word by placing your finger on the cursor and holding until you see the cursor grow to a larger size and then drag it to the mid word spot or wherever you want to place it and beging typing. It's not the same as it was before, a little more time involved and less intuitive but it can be quicker than retyping the whole word. One point, you can only change the cursor when it's a cursor. When it has become a whole word highlight you must tap somewhere else in your text to deactivate the highlight and return to a cursor.

My iPad Pro has always had this problem, long before iOS 13. Much of the time I'm able to manage with dragging the cursor, but sometimes that just doesn't work for some odd reason. Another facet of this issue is when you have a word or words highlighted and want to move the starting point. The context menu appears right where the starting point cursor of the highlighted text is, and it's nearly impossible the grab that cursor without the device thinking you're using the context menu. If you try dragging the cursor in such instances, both the context menu and the highlighting disappear. Yes, there are workarounds as usual, but why do so many things in iOS have to require workarounds? Why does Apple allow so many things in an OS that require workarounds instead of just fixing the problems?

There are just more items in the long list of reasons why I'll never understand why people actually prefer Apple devices. I suppose for many it's just a matter of sticking to what you're familiar with, not unlike the old Windows vs. Mac debate. You're comfortable with what you 'grew up' with, and something different just seems out of place. I wouldn't have this iPad at all if it weren't for the fact that some of my aviation apps are only available on iOS. That's another issue that defies logic when you consider that iOS has roughly a 25% share of the mobile OS market and Android has about 75%. Just as Apple seems to deliberately hobble their products by making them more difficult to use than products that use a different OS, developers of some apps deliberately limit themselves to devices with a much smaller market share. I just don't understand it. iOS devices do several things better than their competitors, graphics capability seeming to be the most predominant of those. So it just seems weird that they limit themselves in so many other obvious, and often rudimentary, ways. I wonder sometimes how incredibly far they'd probably go if they fixed these issues. It's actually kind of sad really.

Sorry. I'll get off my soapbox and shut up now.

Well, up until now I was firmly in the other "fix it" camp.

But you have just blown my mind as I now find the trackpad feature is indeed on both platforms. The only real difference is on Android you can just tap in a word to place the cursor. It can be inaccurate but Android keyboards can have cursor keys to tap it around. Now that I've played with this on both platforms I *gulp* actually quite like it. It is useful to know there is an identical way to manage this on both platforms!

Many thanks

No, I’m joking about going to a Samsung, I don’t even know what their cursor is like.

I will say that I thought the magnifying glass was much easier.

What we’re all the complaints about?

I literally just struggled with the cursor now, after realizing I had a spelling error!

The magnifying glass allowed me to see around my finger at where I was placing the cursor. Not to mention, now it’s hard to get it to stop highlighting words instead of just placing the cursor.

So frustrating.

Perhaps I just never got the memo?

I have the same issue. I am constantly using my phone for typing notes, writing, texting and emailing messages, so I have to edit text quite a bit, and even after over a year or however long this change has taken place, I still cannot get used to it! It extremely frustrating, and if there was a way to switch back to the old texting/ magnifying glass, I would be happy. As you said, the new way has constant glitches, doesn’t actually go where my finger wants it too. The space bar thing seems awesome in theory, yet never actually works and I wish I could describe more of the exact malfunctions I experience, but The key point I’d like to express here is that never a day has gone by that I am able to use the scrolling and or text selection in a way that feels effective, efficient, or satisfactory in any way shape or form. I have delayed speaking on this as I thought it was just me, and needing to give it time to get used to. At this point, however, I’m beginning to think that someone decided to take a wrench to perfectly good circular wheel in order to reinvent it, now I can’t even drive the car, and it’s rather frustrating! Also try going back to edit/ add an extra word in a sentence, why the **** does it automatically capitalize The first letter you type WTF? This has got to be the worst, “improvement” I’ve ever seen!
