Placing cursor middle of word - iOS 13

Does anyone else have issues placing the cursor in the middle of a word to edit with the new iOS 13 update?

It used to be really easy, you just clicked where you wanted the cursor to be... I have no idea why they changed it. I for the life of me couldn't work out how to do it, but found (on another website, not apple's) this explanation:

If your keyboard is currently inactive, just tap wherever you'd like your cursor to go, and it will follow suit. If your cursor is already active, tap the word you want to jump to, which will land the cursor at the beginning or end of the word. Then, long-press the middle of the word, let go, and watch your cursor appear in the middle.

So extra complicated!!

Is there any way to revert this setting, so it was how it was before? Instead of one tap, it's now a tap and a long hold (which is really tricky and glitchy, sometimes the whole word gets highlighted...)

I too was bugged by this but the new way to do it is to let the cursor know you want to edit mid word by placing your finger on the cursor and holding until you see the cursor grow to a larger size and then drag it to the mid word spot or wherever you want to place it and beging typing. It's not the same as it was before, a little more time involved and less intuitive but it can be quicker than retyping the whole word. One point, you can only change the cursor when it's a cursor. When it has become a whole word highlight you must tap somewhere else in your text to deactivate the highlight and return to a cursor.

As it is not broken, there is nothing to fix. It has been changed due in large part to complaints about how hard the magnifying glass was for most people to use. Yes, I get that learning new routines is hard and annoying. But, this is here to stay. So, your choices are to be angry about it or to practice a little with the new editing gestures until they become familiar.

After the cursor gets larger slide your finger down slightly to just below the line the cursor is on; the cursor will not follow unless you move your finger down below the next line. You can then see the word AND the larger cursor, and move it anywhere in the text widget.

I agree--I don't like either of the two new methods--but the spacebar one works the best for me, particularly on my iphone with my fat fingers!

Unfortunately, Apple being Apple, it is unlikely they will change back since they "know what is best for you" and these are now their approved methods. Its one reason I'll never own a Mac...but with a family of iphones for the past 15 years, we are pretty much caught up in that ecosystem for mobiles.

using the space bar to place it in trackball mode does help,, but i think it would be better the opposite way- it should be in track ball mode by default - and the long spacebar should be used to put it in auto highlight mode. And using the spacebar is not intuitive.

Then how would you use it as a spacebar if the default was trackpad?

You should let Apple know your thoughts here:

I have the same problem. Very frustrating. If the word is highlighted for misspelling, but no alternative is offered, I can’t get back into the word to fix it (by inserting a space or whatever). If I tap, the word is then highlighted in “Select” (menu) mode and I still can’t get the cursor in the word. It has become intuitive for me to have the cursor appear wherever you give a light tap or double tap. I’ve tried dragging, and it doesn’t work.

It’s making me crazy! I just want to be able to place the cursor where I want to either remove a letter or correct it. I am not happy with much in the “upgrade” to the new OS! Split pages appear when I don’t want them, can’t place my cursor, email reply box is annoyingly more work than before. The only upside I see is the ability to flag in different colors, which I use to determine how important and email is to me. The rest of the update is bothersome.
