Unable to install Oracle JDK SE8 on Catalina

For various Java apps I've got, I need a working Java JDK8.

Confirm that the upgrade to Catalina seems to have removed any JDK I had working.

Download jdk-8u231-macosx-x64.dmg from Java.com.

But *that* doesn't install, with a "This package is incompatible with this version of MacOS". Reading the install log, "The package is attempting to install content to the system volume"

What am I missing here? How are others installing this JDK?

(This occurs even with sudo spctl --disable-master)

Okay, solved this one myself.

On my upgraded system, there was a dangling link to a previous JRE in /Library/Internet Plug-ins in /System, and that messed up the JDK installer. Removing that link, and the JDK installer runs correctly.
