Imovie turning videos into still pictures. Help.

I've loaded short videos from my iPhone into my Mac pictures folder. When I try to drop them into an iMovie project, they get turned into still pictures (like in a slide show). They play as videos in the picture folder, but not in iMovie. help!

The Media for this clip is still on the camera I imported several videos from my iPhone to my Macbook Pro. 75% had fully downloaded when iMovie crashed. The first video is fine. But all the rest have a camera icon in lower left corner of the thumbnail. If you hover the pointer over the icon is says the media for this clip is still on the camera. I can only view them while the iPhone is connected to the Macbook Pro. I "deleted the media from the event" and then reimported a clip. The thumbnail instantly popped up but with the camera icon. importing media to iMovie from Photos I’m struggling to import media to a new project in iMovie. In iMovie I have selected the Photos Library and chosen Places from the pop up menu. I’ve navigated on the map to the place where all relevant videos and photos were taken on my iPhone. The map showing this place is in the iMovie window at top left, and alongside it at top right a still from a video clip is displayed. The panel above the still tells me that there are 5 photos and 40 video clips available. My questions: How can I best bring all of these media into iMovie? The help pages tell me to drag into timeline or library, but how? The displayed still image blacks out if I try to drag and drop it in the bottom section of the iMovie window and nothing else appears to change. Does iMovie use a physical copy of the original media? (I don’t want to waste space duplicating a probably unwanted original clip but would be lazily happy to have iMovie simply reference it.)

how to move video from photos to iMovie ? I am having trouble moving a video and pic from photo to iMovie. I used to move them to the desktop then to iMovie but I haven't used the app in about 6 months and I have forgotten exactly how I did it.
