I've recently updated my Mac to the most recent available update. The issue I'm having is that my Excel file will no longer open or run properly. When I open old files, all text is inverted and all cells are mis-aligned. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

You have to go to App store and get Microsoft Office Updates. Once installed everything looks to be fine. If you have the icons on the desktop the old icons will have an x through them and you will have to drop in the new updated versions. Hope that helps.

The same thing happened to me as it did to you and I don't understand why. Please, someone tell us what we should do.
I have updated to the new version of Mac and everything looks the other way around.
