Problem with imported Numbers '09 file

I imported a spreadsheet where I keep track of my daily electric meter readings with the formatting so each billing period can be printed on a separate letter-size sheet of paper. However when I imported the file into Numbers 6.1 and went to the print preview, the billing periods no longer lined up on individual printable Letter sheets. I had to go back to the beginning and manually delete/add rows as needed to correct the formatting, a very time-consuming and tedious job. What might have caused this?

The two apps share the same name. But they're really very different, with one being a decade old, now defunct on modern MacOS.

I no longer even own a printer, but if you depend on precision printing of output (as opposed to displaying on a mobile screen or whatever, where it's easy to zoom in and out) then Numbers is not a good choice.

Hi romad,

If you want to print only part of a table (the dates covering the latest electricity bill):

  • select and copy the rows of interest;
  • insert a new sheet and delete the default table;
  • Menu > Edit > Paste (or Paste Formula results if those rows have formulas that depend on the original table);
  • Print only that sheet.

Ian.

Yes, this is a file going back over 8+ years, and I just printed page 97 to attach to my latest electric bill. This is the largest file I have (fortunately) and I've already fixed it. A lot of my "spreadsheets" are actually databases created to replace the ones from the Claris/AppleWorks database module, so they don't need to be adjusted for printing immediately (but it have been nice if Apple had fixed this screw-up).

Those "Feedback" links just lead to a black hole; they're a waste of our time. I've been on these places for years and have never seen anything change due to something sent to one of them.

Curious, have you found a back foot way to monitor suggestions to Apple? If not why would you make a unsubstantiated statement like that?

I think you’ll find Numbers overall is a better app than it was a decade ago. Addressed quite a few items that have been raised.

Anyway it’s your choice.

I actually would prefer to have Claris/AppleWorks back as I consider it better than iWorks in many ways: tighter integration, and a database module for two of them. Admittedly I only used three of the modules: word processing, spreadsheet, & database; never really had a need for the drawing, painting, and terminal modules. Then again, I'd been using AppleWorks since 1984 and only stopped when I got an Intel iMac.
