Cannot change Safari default browser

Hi!

I'm trying to set Chrome as my default browser on my MacBook Air OS Mojave 10.14.06, and actually I've managed to do it but then this happens https://prnt.sc/pn862v which I don't understand why, and from time to time is causing me interference with other applications when suddenly I try to open a .html file for example, and instead of opening it with Chrome, it goes to Safari and due to the authorized developers permissions, it can't open it.

I tried clicking on "Other" and then choosing Chrome as "Open always with this app" but it still remains on Safari as default.

Does anyone know how to definitively change it to Chrome?

Thanks!

If you highlight an html file and do a "Get Info" or command+i you will get a dialog box that has a "Open With" section -- you can change the default app from Safari to whatever you want and then click the "Change All" button. This might take a while if you have a lot of html files, but not positive about this (anyone know if this actually does or not)?

Also, did you already change the System Preferences General pane to have Chrome be your default browser?

Good luck...

This could be a sign of a corrupted preference file.

In Finder click on Go in the menubar, click on Go To Folder

enter the. following text,

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

press Go.

A new Finder window will open with the file highlighted

move it to the Trash don't empty it though.

Restart your Mac, the plist file will be regenerated.

Once the Mac has finished booting up open System Preferences> General

and select Chrome as your default browser. Now select an html file and try

opening it, does it now open in Chrome.

If not check that the default app to open html files is set to Chrome.

If you highlight one of your html files, and then press Command-i this should bring up the info panel

at Open with can you click on the two arrows on the selector and from the list select Chrome, now press Change All.

Now all your html docs should open with Chrome (as Default) when you double-click on them. This change should then be reflected in Finder> Open with. Another way to open files is to highlight the file, press Control and then select Open With, you will see a list of recommended apps or you can choose to select other.

Ok so from the info panel I can see that Chrome has been selected to Open with, so did you then press the Change All button.

But I can also see that the Finder Open with dialogue still has Safari set as the default app to open that file.

So something you can try is to Force Quit the Finder, click on the Apple top left, and select Force Quit, select Finder

and press Relaunch. Again highlight 1Password7.html and from the Finder> File> Open With and see if Google Chrome has now become the default.

Ok so this time do the same procedure but insert this text,

~/Library/Preferences.com.apple.finder.plist

press Go

again put the file in the trash

Restart your Mac.

now highlight one of your html files and press Command-i

in the info panel make sure Chrome is selected in Open with..

remember to press the Change All button also.

Again Restart the Mac, and see if these settings are now being remembered.

If you have been experiencing similar problems in the past then this is not

normal. Are you running any third party software that can alter the behaviour

of the Finder.

No if you can select Chrome from the Open with dropdown in the info panel as shown above (I don't have Chrome)

then press Change All, then all your html files will now open with Chrome.

So in Safari>Preferences> General have Chrome set a your default browser.

But individual files of a certain type have to have the Open with changed to Chrome if that is the preferred app for them to open in.

Sorry, but I'm just a normal computer user. I don't know anything about paths, preferences, folders, etc. I'm following your guidance here so whatever you tell me to write, that's what I'll do; and on top of that, this is my first Mac ever.

I did have installed MalwareBytes but deleted it before doing this last step you mention, but it didn't do the work. Safari still appears as the default browser but Chrome appears as the default one on the "Get Info" window, exactly as I had it before: https://prnt.sc/po1yu5.
