Homepod Volume control via appleTV remote lost with tvOS 13

Since the update to tvOS 13 the Apple TV remote doesn’t control the volume correctly. I get that I can long-press the TV button, select audio, scroll to the HomePod, press and hold that and then adjust the volume, but compared to the previous way of using the dedicated up and down volume buttons on the remote itself this seems a severe step back...to the point I assume I’m doing some thing wrong.

To clarify, if I do use the volume buttons it either turns the TV volume up or down despite having selected the HomePod as the output, or it displays the HomePod volume control but doesn’t actually change the volume.

Any help appreciated.

Hi, I just took another look at it (and this is for Apple TV 4K and I assume ATV4/HD)

if you press both the menu and home buttons at the same time it brings up a little menu and if you use the Airplay icon (bottom left) you can see all audio outputs and select HomePod volume to control with a slider.- while still having the tv audio on as well.

If you’re not using the tv audio as well, you can use as you always did

By the way, youtube has no audio controls (unless they’ve changed it).

The new tvOS 13 now allows you to also have the tv volume on as well as HomePod. Handy for when the HomePod cuts out but it renders the remote useless for controlling HomePod volume. You need to uncheck the audio on Apple TV.

Hope that helps.

**However this is different in Apple Music, in that you can select the Airplay Menu (upper left corner) to see all audio outputs and control the HomePod and still have the TV Audio on.
