Apple Pay Debit Transactions

I have been using Apple Pay at various stores that I use for a while now. But all of a sudden the POS terminal (which says we accept Apple Pay and has the icon for contactless payments) now defaults to a debit transaction which makes it so my Apple Pay will not work.

Why all of a sudden do I have to put in a PIN number when I’ve been doing without for a while now? Two stores in particular are my local Vons grocery store and Rite Aid pharmacy. I have been using Apple Pay just fine here for months. Now I cannot due to the POS terminal prompting me for a PIN number and asking if I want cash back. There is no way for me to manually have the cashier make the transaction a “credit” transaction.

Thank you, I will try this the next time I’m at one of these places.

It is strange though that I have been using this same card just fine for so long now without any issues. It almost seems like some kind of software update to the POS terminal itself. I don’t remember ever being prompted for my PIN number until recently.

Is there a way to go around the PIN number thing when using Apple Pay? Does the Apple Pay Cash card (not apple credit card) let me pay when prompted for a PIN?

Thank you! Looks like this was the answer after all. When using my “credit” card (not my debit card) the transaction goes through just fine.

Still strange though because I have pretty much used ONLY my debit card since I began using Apple Pay and it has worked just fine. Also, I am still able to use my debit card at certain POS terminals and it gives me the option to process as credit or debit. Weird, but glad to have some answers here. Thanks!
