Since iOS13 + iPadOS, Magic Keyboard no longer switches to Emoji

I’ve been using a Magic Keyboard with my iPad Pro for years. To switch between keyboard and emoji. I use the Control + Space keyboard shortcut to do so. Since installed iOS 13 / iPadOS, this functionality will work until you disconnect the keyboard in some way (disable Bluetooth, turn off the keyboard, etc). Once you’ve done so, the same shortcut still shows the 2 keyboard options that you can toggle through (English & Emoji) but when you select emoji, it just disappears along with the cursor. Switching back to the keyboard sometimes brings back the cursor depending on the app you’re in. This behavior continues until you restart the iPad at which point you can toggle between keyboard and emoji until the cycle repeats.

I contacted Apple about this and per usual, “it’s nothing that they’ve heard of or seen yet so it may be fixed in a later software update.”

Am I doing something wrong? User error I hope...
