Magic Keyboard not working with Text Expander, how can I make it work?

I’ve set up text expander on my iPad by adding a Keyboard. It works perfectly on the touchscreen, but does not work on the magic keyboard. I have tried switching the keyboard using the globe key and a selection screen pops up. I can select the emoji keyboard, however, when I select the Text Expander Keyboard it doesn’t work. Is there a setting that needs to be changed or is the magic keyboard not so magic when it comes to using a different keyboard?
