desktop files gone

Trying to work from home on a sick day. Did the update and desktop files disappeared.

Found them in iCloud drive > desktop but can't get them back onto the actual desktop...

Try going to System Preferences/iCloud,System Preferences/Apple ID and turn off Optimization. Then drag the files to the Desktop from Finder's Sidebar.
