Canoscan 5600F and Catalina

That scanner worked fine under Mohave, but in Catalina it's dead. After identifying and loading the scanner, Image Capture gives a message box stating that the scanner isn't plugged in. I've sent feedback to Apple. I'm hoping there's a fix soon; I have three computer labs to update, but I won't upgrade to Catalina if it means none of our scanners will work.

I'm on 10.15.1 and here's what I get when I launch either Image Capture or attempt to capture in Preview:

"Scanner reported an error

Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons:

- Scanner is turned off.

- USB cable is disconnected.

Please check and try again."

Obviously, none of those circumstances are true. I've swapped out scanners, thinking one might be defective. But I get the same error message. The scanner is plugged directly into my 27" iMac's USB port.

Mac OS Catalina 10.15.1

I get the same messages. If I go through system preferences, printers and scanners, and choose CanoScan 5600F and then click "Open Scanner..." it seems to open the scan utility and do the initial overview scan. But not always.

If I get the message waiting for scanner or Overview scan and nothing happens, then I unplug the usb cable, it says Scanner not available, and plug the usb back in it either works or I get the error messages

Scanner reported an error

Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons:

- Scanner is turned off.

- USB cable is disconnected.

Please check and try again.

then I "Quit" the CanoScan 5600F and restart it through system preferences it seems to work. I'm not sure if this always works. Nothing seems to be consistent.

Hope this helps.

Just to mention, I had no problems before Catalina

Canon did come out with a new driver. I installed it, but Image Capture still didn't work. I did find a workaround, and it's to not use Image Capture. I tried Affinity Photo's "Aquire Image" feature, and it now works fine with the new driver. The same might be true for other image editing programs.

I didn't see a new driver. When I am in Canon support looking for an updated driver for Catalina, I get the message:

"There is no driver for the OS Version you selected. The driver may be included in your OS or you may not need a driver."

I don't do a lot of scanning so it's not a big deal, but I do like things to work proper. Thanks for the suggestion, I will try the image capture in other programs.
