Funky Message Update?
Since the last update, my iPhone 8 now opens directly into the last conversation I texted in rather than to the standard message thread page even after closing out of the messaging app.
iPhone 8, iOS 13
If you closed the Messages app while still in the message, without going back to the messages list, then it is opening correctly.
