Dolby vision apple tv+

Oh hi, have apple tv 4k box and have had no problems with it u till now.

November 1st saw the launch of apple tv+ which I happily subscribed to. This is where my troubles started.


I've have Netflix and purchased movies through the apple tv app on my iPad and watch them on my apple TV box. All the dolby vision films and tv shows play perfectly not a problem.


How ever on the new apple tv+ it's a different story. During the first episode of The Morning Show when dolby vision is active 3 out 5 scenes have what I can only describe as an old camera film negative look to it! Colours are all inverted in one scene and then the next one all perfect. Is happening in the second episode also and the first episode of See this is also happening. Have changed hdmi cable and input and made sure my LG tv settings for dobly vision are enabled and they are. I turn off match dynamic range to off and there is no video problems but I feel like I'm losing out on the proper 4k quality of dolby vision.


My head is wrecked.

Please i can't be the only one affected with this.

It looks like Apple is well aware of the issue, the 5th episodes of See, The Morning Show & For All Mankind are now in HDR only, no more Dolby Vision despite the fact that the show description in the Apple TV app indicates Dolby Vision. Hopefully they will communicate on that soon. In the meantime, this thread has started today: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250857625

Well, so what ya saying is you too had the same negative effect with tv+ dv content. And then apple took the dv stuff down for the wk or 3 and now dv content is back again is the same issue of negative color effect still there ?


You say you reset and reinstalled the 4k box gain, and your tv+ dv content is now sorted playing perfect?

I have been through full factory resets with both my TCL 55R625 TV and my Apple TV 4K and the problem remains exactly like before. Tech reviewers have said Dolby has admitted there are problems with DV over HDMI cables with some manufacturers and that firmware updates are needed. But some of these reports go back to 2017 so I don’t know if any fixes were ever released.

My Apple TV worked perfectly up until recently with Dolby Vision. Then I started getting the photo negative look on the switching to dark scenes whether watching Apple tv + or Netflix I can confirm I am using the best high speed 8k Belkin cable I have tested it running straight into the TV with the issue still being present. I have twice reset the box to no avail. I can confirm that I have run this through a Sony STR-1080 and my new Denon AVR-X3600h receiver both with no improvement to the result. This is very disappointing considering the price of this unit. I can confirm that Dolby Vision plays back perfectly through my LG TV app and also through my Amazon fire tv 4k firestick. I can confirm if I turn the Dolby vision off there is no problem but this is defeating the object Apple need to admit there are problems with this box and remove the Dolby vision compatible advertising or fix the issue. I am not Apple bashing as I have other Apple items ie iPad pro 2018 iMac mini 2018 but this issue needs fixing.

I find that HDR is unreliable & inconsistent on the new AppleTV series. For example, "The Morning Show", "See" and "For All Mankind" vary by episode. Some episodes will launch in HDR while most of them don't..... It's ALWAYS the same episodes! This never occurs when viewing Netflix or Amazon Prime via the same hardware (LG C8 OLED with a Roku Ultra (2019). Something is causing the HDR and DD flags to

Thank god somebody else has this issue my Apple TV 4K used to work perfectly with Dolby Vision, I invested in many Dolby Vision films off the Apple store now the unit is incapable of playing dolby Vision back properly from any source including Netflix. The most annoying thing is Apple don't seem to acknowledge there is a fault with this unit. I have done the same as you and turned Dolby Vision off. I think mine is still under guarantee so I will try and take it back to the Apple store for a refund as the unit not fit for purpose of playing back Dolby Vision as advertised. I have followed all advice on these forums ref resetting, re-downloaded the software to no avail.

Dolby Vision only had issues in the aTV+ app for me but those have all been resolved. If you can’t play any Dolby vision then it’s either a bad Apple TV box, a bad cable, settings that were changed for the HDMI port on your TV (UHD deep colour disabled), or out dated software in your tv (some Sony TVs had a messed up implementation of Dolby vision that made it not work with devices connected to HDMI ports).

I am using the high performance 8k Belkin cable as recommended by Apple and tried many other leads. I have also tried running Apple TV direct through the TV and the problem still persists. I have been using this unit for a good few months with no trouble whatsoever until recently, so it is not my equipment.

I can also confirm that Dolby Vision through my LG TV Netflix app is perfect and plays back with no trouble whatsoever and I can also confirm Dolby Vision plays back perfectly on my Amazon fire TV Cube with no problems. This is what makes it so frustrating as Apple will more than likely blame my equipment rather than there piece of junk.

I can't imagine why it cud be the box when everything and I mean everything else that is in Dolby Vision works apart from one fricken app that's Apple TV+

If everything Dolby Vision wasn't working then something was up but one app Apple's own app not working!


K on your apple box is Netflix Dolby Vision stuff working and has if any of your purchased movies in dv ala apple tv app working fine?

Right everyone we need a bit of a poll here.


For those of you who have an apple tv 4k box where purchased films from apple tv app and the shows and movies stream using Netflix all with Dolby Vision content works perfectly fine included with the updated tv os works perfectly

And for the ones where Dolby Vision content only in apple tv+ plays with this inverted colours major problem

I googled tv plus support. Followed a long series of links until I was asked to enter a phone number. They rang me straight back and took it from there. They watched through an ipad as I demonstrated it and then sent a link by email to upload a video I took of the screen. An hour later after I uploaded it they called to say that they were working on the problem and would advise. This was about 23 hours ago.
