Dolby vision apple tv+

Oh hi, have apple tv 4k box and have had no problems with it u till now.

November 1st saw the launch of apple tv+ which I happily subscribed to. This is where my troubles started.

I've have Netflix and purchased movies through the apple tv app on my iPad and watch them on my apple TV box. All the dolby vision films and tv shows play perfectly not a problem.

How ever on the new apple tv+ it's a different story. During the first episode of The Morning Show when dolby vision is active 3 out 5 scenes have what I can only describe as an old camera film negative look to it! Colours are all inverted in one scene and then the next one all perfect. Is happening in the second episode also and the first episode of See this is also happening. Have changed hdmi cable and input and made sure my LG tv settings for dobly vision are enabled and they are. I turn off match dynamic range to off and there is no video problems but I feel like I'm losing out on the proper 4k quality of dolby vision.

My head is wrecked.

Please i can't be the only one affected with this.

Thanks

Brian

It looks like Apple is well aware of the issue, the 5th episodes of See, The Morning Show & For All Mankind are now in HDR only, no more Dolby Vision despite the fact that the show description in the Apple TV app indicates Dolby Vision. Hopefully they will communicate on that soon. In the meantime, this thread has started today: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250857625

Here are some examples of Dolby Vision tone mapping or raised black display errors in Apple TV4K Dolby Vision content on my TCL 55R625 TV. It only happens in very dark scenes and only with Dolby Vision content from Apple TV over HDMI.

It doesn’t matter which Dolby Vision preset is used but I’ve tried all different settings and a factory reset.

I’m using the Dolby Vision 4K60hz setting. Match Range and Match Rate we’re off for this test but it’s the same Problem if I choose 4KSDR and turn Match Range On.

I have tried 3 different certified Dolby Vision high speed cables for what that’s worth... And different HDMI ports.

examples top left Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, The Matrix and The Morning Show.

We have a 2018 Sony TV that's Dolby Vision compatible. Still, we've traditionally set our 4K Apple TV box to HDR, not Dolby Vision, because content not encoded with Dolby Vision tends to look dark or too contrasty. But when we tried playing The Morning Show, we found the reverse to be true: we had to turn on Dolby Vision just to be able to get a decent picture. Apple TV+ content is the outlier here. It's a nuisance to have to change the output setting on the Apple TV box just for a handful of programs. Surely content can be mastered to look good using either setting.

I’m having the same problem. No problem with Netflix or Amazon movies through the Apple TV, but anything from ITunes or any of the new Apple TV+ shows has the “Negative” look with dark scenes in the movies/shows. I’ve tried different settings, and I’ve uninstalled/reinstalled my Apple TV from factory settings. Need help fast. This has been going on since the new software update a couple months back.

Just wanted to say I’m having the same issue. Have had no issues watching DV content on my LG TV with any other service. The very first time I saw the “negative” look you described was when I played the trailer for “See”. Since then all Apple TV+ content does the same thing. Even on the Apple TV+ logo at the beginning of shows. I now have to disable DV to watch Apple’s content but not happy with that as a solution.

Yeah, same problem here with DV getting a negative look. Hope Apple sorts this out.

I had a similar issue with my Oppo 203 over the summer when a firmware update caused the player to do the DV processing instead of just passing it on to the TV. It was completely messed up though and saturated with pink, not just a problem with dark scenes.

i have been working with both Apple and TCL to get this issue sorted. Appears to affect mainly Apple content as I can play the same DV content through the Vudu app on Appletv with no Issue for the same scenes.

Apple has turned DolbyVision back on again, however the issue still isn’t fixed. Seeing the exact same issues as described throughout this thread. I had hoped that when they turned DV off it was an acknowledgement of the issue and a temporary measure while it was fixed, but perhaps not. I’m not going to keep turning dynamic range matching off just to watch ATV+ content so i guess I’ll just stop watching it. No big loss, it’s mostly utter ***** anyway.

Yeah, I noticed it was back and then quickly disappointed they didn't resolve the issue. For a company that tries so hard to market itself as superior, they're not doing a very good job. I'm mostly happy with the device after breaking away from Apple for 20 years, but this doesn't inspire confidence that they're technically competent.

Meanwhile... Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and Vudu content with Dolby Vision all work without issue.

I have the same issue as you, Dolby vision used to play back perfect now none of my Dolby vision plays back properly from the Apple TV box including my purchased films, I get the same negative image on dark scenes as you describe even on Netflix. This is definitely an Apple TV problem as I have the recommended Belkin high speed lead I have also tried plugging straight into the tv with no success. If I use the app on the tv for Netflix I have no issues. I also have no issues with Dolby vision on my fire tv stick 4K. Another thing I have noticed is occasionally you will loose the picture, goes snowy white and it then comes back on I thought my unit was at fault when I bought it so I exchanged it the new one but this did the same. I have this week changed my AV receiver from Sony to Denon no improvement though. Personally speaking I think Apple need to contact Amazon and ask them how the implement Dolby vision that does work and at a fraction of the price.
