AirPod Pro Microphone Call Quality

Since using the Airpod Pros this week and on calls people have been commenting on how they are having a hard time hearing me. This is something that never happened with my regular AirPods. From what I can gather it sounds like the external noise cancellation or noise reduction algorithm is getting confused with the noise outside and my voice and effectively cutting out or reducing my voice and boosting the background noise.

Are others running into this problem? The common complaint I’m getting when talking on the phone with the Airpod Pro is that the background noise is too loud.

Here's what I found. There are two ways to pair/connect the AirPods.

1) As described in the manual where you simply open the lid of the Airpods and bring them close to the iPhone then follow the instructions.

2) Where you go into your Bluetooth settings and search for and pair the Airpods the way you would do other Bluetooth devices.

The same 2 options also apply to subsequent connections after initial pairing.

When I pair or connect using Option 2 above, the telephone quality is awful for the person I'm calling as they hear background noise almost like it has been amplified. I suspect that is because if I connect to my AirPods this way, the noise reduction functionality doesn't work as expected.

When I connect or pair using Option 1, the sound quality is perfect for the person I'm calling and they hear little background noise.

I'm not saying this will help solve your own issues but I thought it might be helpful to share what I've found.

Thanks

Ian

We can all complain till the cows come home on this group. My question is - is anybody from Apple listening or doing anything about it? The call quality is just terrible on the airpod pros and no update till date has fixed it. Something or somebody really needs to get Apple's attention on this mic issue.

My airpod pro's were replaced - but the replacements have not solved the issue.

I've complained to Currys, where I bought mine from. They're 7 months old. I did the Apple recall for Airpods manufactured before Oct 2020, it made no difference.

I did have a pair prior to all of this with the same issue, so 3 pairs in total.

Currys fully refunded me and I am back to using the headphones that came with the phone, perfect sound quality and people can hear me when I am outside. Problem solved.

Fingers crossed this does get resolved, in the meantime I will be looking at other brands... Shame because I love Apple products, this is the only item from Apple that I've had a negative experience with.

I originally bought the Airpods and had issues which I thought would be resolved with the Airpods Pro. I only use them when working from home (Presentations/Voice Calls etc.). The common complaint I received from investors and co-workers is they cannot hear me when I am using the Airpods Pro. I had them replaced and unfortunately the replacement has the same issue. I stopped using them and bought a $12 hardwired headset and no complaints since. Not sure I understand how a $300 premium is outperformed by a $12 product....

I'm having this exact same issue. I can't take phone calls on from my iPhone or Mac book. Everyone complains that they can hear background noise better than they can hear me. This is even a problem in relatively isolated environments. I really hope this gets addressed. These have been my favorite headphones, but I don't use them because I can't use them to take phone calls! Please help!

7500 people and counting, I have had mine a week. People can’t here you but they hear everything in the background thankfully I kept my standard AirPods the pros are going back !

This was my second set having bought on release day. I took them back for crackling issues. Now I thought hey Atmos and spatial must have fixed it by now! NOPE 👎 awful to listen to things amazing to have a conversation trash.

I had my airpods pro replaced for a different problem - one of them was disharging noticeably faster than the other .. and not charging back up as fast or sometimes not at all.

The replacement airpods pro ear pieces also have the poor audio quality problem that my faulty-charging pieces had roo. Handwaving this shouldn't be legal any more as we paid premium price for a functionality that is certainly not being met.

I have this same issue, Apple, please fix it. This issue can be simply duplicated with a fan truning on/off when you are making a phone call with others, I'm sure that your talents have better ways to confirm that with your expensive instuments in your FA lab. For me, it must be a design flaw, A $250 airpids pro cannot distinguish the real environemtal noise and the user's voice when there is a wind blowing through. that's not acceptable, more importantly, with some many users facing this same issue, there is no any announcement or solutions from Apple... something must be done for this...

What I hate about these expensive airpods Pro is that making call sucks for such premium price. People from the other side of the line always complain about I'm in a noisy environment drowning my voice, when in fact it is not in reality, but the mic in these airpods pro are amplifying high pitch leather shoe footsteps which were 60 meters away from me in an empty mall.

I have this issue on my dad's Airpods pro as well. I am constantly on the phone with my Fiance in Australia and he said that he can barely hear me at first when I am talking and then it clears up immediately and he can hear me clearly. I just sent my personal Airpods pro out for repair for this reason and now my dad's Airpods Pro are doing it as well! He says that I sound incredibly muffled then after a second or two of talking, he then says that he can hear me. I am hoping that they can figure out what is going on and fix the issue.
