AirPod Pro Microphone Call Quality

Since using the Airpod Pros this week and on calls people have been commenting on how they are having a hard time hearing me. This is something that never happened with my regular AirPods. From what I can gather it sounds like the external noise cancellation or noise reduction algorithm is getting confused with the noise outside and my voice and effectively cutting out or reducing my voice and boosting the background noise.

Are others running into this problem? The common complaint I’m getting when talking on the phone with the Airpod Pro is that the background noise is too loud.

Here's what I found. There are two ways to pair/connect the AirPods.

1) As described in the manual where you simply open the lid of the Airpods and bring them close to the iPhone then follow the instructions.

2) Where you go into your Bluetooth settings and search for and pair the Airpods the way you would do other Bluetooth devices.

The same 2 options also apply to subsequent connections after initial pairing.

When I pair or connect using Option 2 above, the telephone quality is awful for the person I'm calling as they hear background noise almost like it has been amplified. I suspect that is because if I connect to my AirPods this way, the noise reduction functionality doesn't work as expected.

When I connect or pair using Option 1, the sound quality is perfect for the person I'm calling and they hear little background noise.

I'm not saying this will help solve your own issues but I thought it might be helpful to share what I've found.

Thanks

Ian

I have the same problem bad call quality from air pod pros from friends and family. I am having better call quality from a set of cheap soundpeats earphones.

To pay $349.00 for AirPod pros is a lot of money. Hoping the iOS 15 will fix this issue. Very embarrassing when people cannot hear you. These have been replaced by apple and still same issue.

I honestly think they don’t care, I explained to a manager of a store in London that the old standard AirPods have amazing audio quality for calls yet the New Pro! Again Pro!! Is awful I explained over 7000 people on here feel this way. I thought watching movies with the Dolby Atmos was incredible truly incredible but and it’s a massive but the audio is just well ****! Apple if your reading this it’s going to be another mobile me situation. Sort it out and talk to each other ffs don’t spoil a product get it fixed.

I have read through this thread. Perhaps I have missed something new but I am having a huge issue with the microphone on my AirPod Pro. Microphone quality is extremely poor. I have reset multiple times using both ways of re-connecting. I have changed accessibility settings. Still my voice quality is terrible. Any suggestions?

I called Apple and they told me that I could put them in for repair but they weren’t under warranty any longer so I’d have to pay for it. Why would I pay for their known defect? They really don’t give a ****. Thankfully I bought them at Costco and their return policy doesn’t exist so I’ll be taking them back today and buying something that I can actually use on a phone call. You should be ashamed of yourself Apple. I have all of your products and now I seriously doubt if I’m going to be replacing them with new Apple products

I have never posted on an apple community forum (even when they changed the "gold" on apple watches), but this is a ridiculous problem that make my airpods pro useful only for non-human listening. I have to remove them to take a call and hopefully have my case on me or then my sister is accidentally in my pocket unless I make additional efforts. Adding to this forum to simply increase the volume of activity, since that is how companies decide what issues are really impacting customers. I have also had my airpods pro replaced, reset, restarted. The MOST frustrating thing is when the apple support team explains noise cancellation (which is for my benefit not the caller). Anyway... Just piling on in this forum, because it is ridiculous that my most expensive pair of wireless headphones from a brand like Apple are unusable for their primary purpose.

Having the same problem. Tried clean unpairing/pairing - with macbook air M1 and iPad. No improvement. The odd thing is that it seemed to have been fine for a while as folks at the other end of a conf call have commented about the good audio quality. However, in the recent weeks, this has shifted to "I can't hear you", "Your voice is low", "Your voice is muffled" etc. I took it to the nearby Apple service store and they updated the firmware for me. No changes post that too. I feel cheated for having paid so much money for such poor call quality.

I am glad you feel that the issue has been settled and appreciate your passed on information. Apple will love you for that!

Unfortunately your wrong and so is apple support! I suggest you and apple support read and digest all 7800 comments on this issue before you state that it is solved you haven’t read them.

You see this is a flawed product and as long as people like yourself mis inform the masses we will be in a endless loop of mess. They won’t fix this now. They will bring out a new product and I guarantee 100% you will not be happy with the product I unlike apple am that confident. You sadly will begin the endless circle of not having EarPods while they get permanently changed out.

Now I ask are you happy with the cost. Sorry for the hard hit but it’s driving me bonkers that this issue has been a problem since the get go.

I have had 3 sets all the same issue! People can’t here you on the phone!

let me iterate the irony People can’t here you on the AirPods Pro that are connected to the IPhone. The IPHONE so is the product fit for purpose. Let me answer that again!! NO!

Do not mislead people. It does not solve jack sh*t. Apple has been horrendous with its products recently and yet people are oblivious to their errors and pass it off as something they can live with. I don’t understand why this is so or why they have this blind faith in Apple. I’ve been an android user for most of my life and recently switched my ecosystem to try it out and am full or regrets. It’s simple: Android cares way more about user experience and the little things than Apple does. It’s that simple. There, i’ve said it.
