AirPods Pros making crackling static noises

I recently received my new AirPod Pro ear buds. First off let me say the noise cancellation is a transforming. That aside, the old problem of making a popping sound followed by a buzz seems to still plague these ear phones.

For reference, I left them in the charging case plugged in overnight. I had them in for about 2 hours at work and then they started I started noticing a faint popping/clicking noise that starts in the right then the left and is a single pop in each ear.  If they are in transparency mode, it pops then has a 1.5-2 second buzzing sound.  If it is in noise cancellation mode it merely pops.  It will do this in one ear, then repeat about 5-10 seconds later on the other ear.

I tried alternating between transparency mode and noise cancellation mode.  I tried playing music and pausing music. I placed them back into the case and took them out again.  I contacted Apple Support in order to work through this and am attempting to figure out what's going on.

I was able to get it to momentarily stop by placing them back in the charging case for about 30 seconds to a minute and then back into my ears. Has anyone seen this on the past models, or with the current ones, and know why it happens?

A particularly helpful Genius in the main DC Apple Store seems to have found a solution to the crackling issue. After describing the problem and litany of troubleshooting measures I had taken, he said "Hold on a sec, I think I can fix that." He came back with alcohol wipes and some gray fun-tak (aka adhesive putty). After wiping down the white plastic parts with alcohol, he very gently pressed a small amount of the fun-tak against each of the black microphone covers to pull out tiny pieces of debris. Apparently these microphones are ridiculously sensitive, so if anything gets in there it screws up the whole noise cancelling feedback loop.

I'm only 24 hours out from the repair, but all seems well so far. The main takeaway for me... don't put your AirPod pros into your pocket unsheathed. And generally don't expose them to any kind of dirt or dust.

Has anyone found a fix for this yet? I got my Airpod Pros back in January and they were fine until early May when the latest firmware update came out, then that crackling sound started happening in my right Airpod. It only happens in NC and transparency modes. I've tried resetting them, forgetting this device, etc, and nothing works so far. Apple really sh*t the bed with these things, they don't stay secure in my ears either. Hands down the worst Apple product I've ever bought. I won't recommend them to anyone. I should be asking for my $$ back.

You just described my exact experience with these things lol. I've tried everything you have. Interesting thing I noticed in the last few days however, when I have them paired with my Macbook Pro, there's no static/crackling sound, it only happens when paired with my iPhone or iPad. Nonetheless the Airpods Pros are pieces of sh*t, Apple should be doing a complete recall on these things.

I've read stories of people sending the one defective airpod pro back to Apple through the mail and receiving a replacement, there's no way I'm doing that lol. I should be able to walk into an Apple Store and get a brand new replacement pair sealed in the box, not those pairs in the little plastics bag they give out as replacements. I'm either gonna push for a refund or wait until the next generation of these things comes out.

From what I’m seeing on these forums and other forums there is no fix for this issue. I’ve been reading posts of people going through 1-2 replacements pairs with the same issues. Like I’ve said, Apple needs to recall these things and pull them from stores. They also need to give people the options of a refund or waiting until the next generation of AirPods Pro’s comes out.

This exactly why I’m not wasting my time with replacements. I keep reading post after post of people with 2-3 faulty replacements. I love Apple products and will continue to be a loyal customer, but they need to recall these, pull them from stores and stop sending out replacements. They need to give people the option of a refund, (even if past the refund period or outta warranty), or wait until the AirPods Pro 2 comes out and exchange for those.

I haven’t done anything yet. I’m booking a Genius Bar appointment soon and I’m get a replacement pair. If the replacement pair still makes that static crackling noise, I’m either getting a refund or waiting until the AirPods Pro 2 comes out. I’m not going to the Apple store multiple times to get these things replaced. Apple needs to stop selling these things and admit they screwed up big time with them.

My AirPods Pro were fine for the first few months. All of a sudden, I put on the AirPods and I started to hear the static crackling sound in the left earpiece. I thought it wasn’t going to go away but it disappeared after 2 days. The sound transferred to my right earpiece. I’ve tried leaving my AirPods in the case for awhile and it would still happen here and there. Don’t know what to do at this point. I just hope that the crackling sound will go away.

Completely agree with so many of the comments. I have had nothing but Apple products for 15 years with multiple laptops, iPads, iPhones and lots of accessories and home devices. Occasionally there have been issues with some of these (completely understandable as I am in manufacturing and get that things do happen). However up until today I have always been able to take it to an Apple Store and they swapped out the problematic product for a new one. I was told like many others on here that I have to put a deposit down, send the others back and they will let me know once they take a look and determine it wasn’t abuse if they are warranting the product and not charging me. The store had plenty of stock on Airpod Pros but said they were only for sale and not for taking care of long time customers like they have always done in the past and blamed the new policy on COVID. I for years have always paid way more for Apple products and supported the company because of the incredible customer service that I received (even though I didn’t need to very often, but knowing if there was an issue how I would be treated). Apple just became another manufacturer like all the rest with how they are addressing this know issue. Certainly will change mine (and I’m sure many others) view on spending as much as many of us do for personal and our businesses for their product at premium prices.

To be honest with the exception of my AirPod Pros, I've been very happy with my Apple products over the last 15-20 years. I've always gotten my $$ worth out of their products, but these AirPod Pros are garbage. They should've been recalled and pulled from stores months ago. Customers shouldn't have to be getting these things replaced 3 or 4 times, that should be a wake up call for Apple to recall them and stop manufacturing them until they've worked out the glitches.
