AirPods Pros making crackling static noises

I recently received my new AirPod Pro ear buds. First off let me say the noise cancellation is a transforming. That aside, the old problem of making a popping sound followed by a buzz seems to still plague these ear phones.

For reference, I left them in the charging case plugged in overnight. I had them in for about 2 hours at work and then they started I started noticing a faint popping/clicking noise that starts in the right then the left and is a single pop in each ear.  If they are in transparency mode, it pops then has a 1.5-2 second buzzing sound.  If it is in noise cancellation mode it merely pops.  It will do this in one ear, then repeat about 5-10 seconds later on the other ear.

I tried alternating between transparency mode and noise cancellation mode.  I tried playing music and pausing music. I placed them back into the case and took them out again.  I contacted Apple Support in order to work through this and am attempting to figure out what's going on.

I was able to get it to momentarily stop by placing them back in the charging case for about 30 seconds to a minute and then back into my ears. Has anyone seen this on the past models, or with the current ones, and know why it happens?

A particularly helpful Genius in the main DC Apple Store seems to have found a solution to the crackling issue. After describing the problem and litany of troubleshooting measures I had taken, he said "Hold on a sec, I think I can fix that." He came back with alcohol wipes and some gray fun-tak (aka adhesive putty). After wiping down the white plastic parts with alcohol, he very gently pressed a small amount of the fun-tak against each of the black microphone covers to pull out tiny pieces of debris. Apparently these microphones are ridiculously sensitive, so if anything gets in there it screws up the whole noise cancelling feedback loop.

I'm only 24 hours out from the repair, but all seems well so far. The main takeaway for me... don't put your AirPod pros into your pocket unsheathed. And generally don't expose them to any kind of dirt or dust.

This is exactly the same issue I’m having only mine pop when I walk. Which is maddening. I’m not even listening to things with the sound that high or high bass.

Before the first firmware update my left earbud loudly squawked when I put it into my ear after a few days of use.

I also see that sometimes my left earbud simply doesn’t charge and that’s when the case is on a charger. Case 100%, right earbud 100%, left earbud 40%.

I'm hoping Apple fixes this soon.

My left airpods pro got replaced today with a new one.

But I was having problem syncing both of them, until I had to reset to factory default each individual airpods pro.

Reset to Factor Default for the right airpods pro.

Reset to Factor Default for the left airpods pro.

Reset to Factor Default for the for both right and left airpods pro.

Finally it both Right and left airpods pro sync, and able to pair properly.

Some technician said needed to leave the airpods for 30minutes for firmware update. but in my case it was still not working after leaving them both in the case for 30minutes.

It happened something strange now: I had this problem on the right earbud, but I got used to it. Then I wanted to try to replace it, and the support sent me a new earbud.

The thing is: after I’ve paired the earbuds, I noticed that the new (right) earbud perfectly blocks external sounds, but there’s something wrong with the left one, because it seems that external sounds are still capable of passing trough.

Before I didn’t notice this thing, and now it is driving me crazy. Is it possibile that noises aren’t completely cancelled because of some microphone problems and that I didn’t noticed it before because this problem affected the original pair of AirPods? I think I’ll contact again the Apple support.

3 months in and it seems they have no clue what the **** is wrong. Same situation here - right earpiece starts popping/crackling sounds whichever ANC mode is switched on. Apple Support told me to wait for a new SW update. When asked about a possible release date, they have zero idea. Sure, I paid $250 for a pair of ANC earpieces so I could use them in plain mode, no ANC 😄

The noise changed from my first post. For a while, the popping went away completely. For the past couple of weeks, I've been getting distortion in my left ear with certain frequencies. It happens both when I talk and when there's outside noise. Took them to Apple. They said the same thing as other people have been posting: wait for a software update. The guy also said they had no AirPod Pros in stock to switch them out with. He also tried to tell me it might be that they're not fitting in my ear correctly. I'm a musician and wear in-ear monitors and hearing protection all the time. They fit just fine. I also did the fit test on the phone when I originally got them and the phone confirmed it. Here's hoping a software update will finally fix this thing!
