AirPods Pros making crackling static noises

I recently received my new AirPod Pro ear buds. First off let me say the noise cancellation is a transforming. That aside, the old problem of making a popping sound followed by a buzz seems to still plague these ear phones.

For reference, I left them in the charging case plugged in overnight. I had them in for about 2 hours at work and then they started I started noticing a faint popping/clicking noise that starts in the right then the left and is a single pop in each ear.  If they are in transparency mode, it pops then has a 1.5-2 second buzzing sound.  If it is in noise cancellation mode it merely pops.  It will do this in one ear, then repeat about 5-10 seconds later on the other ear.

I tried alternating between transparency mode and noise cancellation mode.  I tried playing music and pausing music. I placed them back into the case and took them out again.  I contacted Apple Support in order to work through this and am attempting to figure out what's going on.

I was able to get it to momentarily stop by placing them back in the charging case for about 30 seconds to a minute and then back into my ears. Has anyone seen this on the past models, or with the current ones, and know why it happens?

A particularly helpful Genius in the main DC Apple Store seems to have found a solution to the crackling issue. After describing the problem and litany of troubleshooting measures I had taken, he said "Hold on a sec, I think I can fix that." He came back with alcohol wipes and some gray fun-tak (aka adhesive putty). After wiping down the white plastic parts with alcohol, he very gently pressed a small amount of the fun-tak against each of the black microphone covers to pull out tiny pieces of debris. Apparently these microphones are ridiculously sensitive, so if anything gets in there it screws up the whole noise cancelling feedback loop.

I'm only 24 hours out from the repair, but all seems well so far. The main takeaway for me... don't put your AirPod pros into your pocket unsheathed. And generally don't expose them to any kind of dirt or dust.

I finally caved and called Apple support this past Thursday and my replacements are coming tomorrow. There’s no fix for this crackling/staticky issue. It’s not a software or firmware issue. The usual troubleshooting steps don’t work. It’s a flawed hardware issue and Apple needs to step up and admit they screwed up with these things. They need to recall them and pull them from stores. People shouldn’t have to be going through multiple replacements with the same issues.

I have had the same issue. Apple support suggested I wait for a new SW update - did so, two times (two SW versions) and the problem did not just refuse to go away, other issues appeared. That was the moment I took them in for a warranty repair and they swapped them for me for brand new ones. Try pushing them to do so with yours, too, since it clearly is a HW related problem and they better start handling their shi*...

Hello,

I see there are some issues with AirPods Pro making crackling or static like noises and in some cases it occurs when using Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode. I know it's important for AirPods Pro to work as expected; I'd like to help. Below are some resources that may help to troubleshoot this behavior:

Luckily I had AppleCare. Apple is sending me a new left EarPod. They put a hold on my credit card until I return the faulty one.

I did my communication with Apple through chat. They made me run all kinds of tests on them first. Locate the serial number on the inside top of the lid. It is TINY print. You can also get the serial number from your iPhone. Settings, General, About, AirPods.

They will have you unpair and re-pair and test on both transparency and noise cancellation modes.

Good luck.

In my experience, yes, Apple exchanged it, only putting a $99 hold on a credit card which will be removed once they’ve received my defective one back in the mail. They’ll ask for the serial # of your AirPods (which can be found under the lid). Also on the call, I explained to them all the things I had already tried (so they wouldn’t have me repeat those steps over the phone to no avail). Like others have suggested, I think Apple is aware of this problem, and thankfully, they take care of it quickly.

I have the same issue in the right ear only in my AirPod Pro’s. Bought them back in Sept/Oct of 19 and just started crackling/ popping in the right ear only 2-3 weeks ago.

It happens when paired to iPhone, work Dell Laptop, Peloton Bike, transparency mode, noise cancelling, or off. Makes the noise when just in my ear from moving around, chewing, or from the slight bounce walking.

Tried unpairing, pairing, reset, etc. No change.

Did a chat with apple support today and they are sending a replacement right AirPod.

I had this problem when connected to my iPhone 11 Pro Max, but always only in the same part of my apartment. I assumed it was an issue with so much metal interfering with the connection. Before trying a forget, reset and repair sequence I connected them to my iPad Pro 2020 and voila... problem gone. Ive since done the reset sequence which only ever worked temporarily for my powerbeats pro, but I’m just gonna keep them connected to my ipad while in that area of my home. For those of you still suffering from this problem, forget the airpods connection, reset the airpods to factory default, then do a network reset on your iphone and all other mobile devices using the same icloud account. Ive had the problem occur with airpods 1, Powerbeats pro, and now airpods pro, and this method always fixes it at least until an ios or firmware update. Hope this helps

Keep pushing Apple, after two replacements, Apple finally sent me a brand new set. What's upsetting is that they didn't ask me to send back the defective AirPods. It sort say to me that Apple knows about the issue and don't need anymore retuned items to confirm anything. I'm still skeptical that my new pairs will last. However I've also talked couple of friends who own AirPods Pro without any problems "yet," thus maybe there is a batch of lemons out there that need to be replaced. I think Apple should recall these AirPods, but is avoiding it. More people need to know that they can get help(replacements to start with) if they notice any ides with their AirPods pros.

If you don't mind the small hassle, support is quick to replace. Just had set #5 (went back and counted) sent out...they also sent a new case this time. Basically got on with chat support, quickly stopped them before they sent question. Sent them a few of the old case #'s and told him I could answer questions, but had gone through everything in terms of resetting devices, resynching, and basically wanted to figure out how to get a replacement set sent out again ASAP. Had replacements by noon next day.
