AirPods Pros making crackling static noises

I recently received my new AirPod Pro ear buds. First off let me say the noise cancellation is a transforming. That aside, the old problem of making a popping sound followed by a buzz seems to still plague these ear phones.

For reference, I left them in the charging case plugged in overnight. I had them in for about 2 hours at work and then they started I started noticing a faint popping/clicking noise that starts in the right then the left and is a single pop in each ear.  If they are in transparency mode, it pops then has a 1.5-2 second buzzing sound.  If it is in noise cancellation mode it merely pops.  It will do this in one ear, then repeat about 5-10 seconds later on the other ear.

I tried alternating between transparency mode and noise cancellation mode.  I tried playing music and pausing music. I placed them back into the case and took them out again.  I contacted Apple Support in order to work through this and am attempting to figure out what's going on.

I was able to get it to momentarily stop by placing them back in the charging case for about 30 seconds to a minute and then back into my ears. Has anyone seen this on the past models, or with the current ones, and know why it happens?

I have the same thicking/crackling sound, only in the right ear AirPod Pro. The problem occurs in transparency mode, in noice cancellation mode, but not when both modes are turned off. So, seems to be a sortware issue? I tried all the suggested steps above, but none seem to work. Apple, please help me. These things are too expensive to have bugs.

Are any of you on the iOS beta program. I’m on my 3rd set of AirPods Pro with this same problem? It sounds like one of my buds developed a rattle or weird sound during the ambient sound or noise cancellation modes. Apple updated my iPhone firmware 13.4 (17E5255a) and the problem went away. I’m not sure why the problem suddenly stopped, considering they didn’t update my AirPods Pro firmware.

Dude! That’s Crazy! I never heard it taking that long! I went through 3 of them. I’m done the the pros. And my first pair happened last November and they still haven’t had a fix for it. They’re acting as if this issue never happened. I wish we could get someone with a lot of followers or tech connections to get the word out. I tried a few people but heard nothing back 😔

Bought my Pros in December 2019. Crackling started a few weeks ago in the left bud and is now perceivable in both. I initially thought I had water in my ear and that the weird cracklings sound was caused by the tips squeaking against my ear canal. Then I shifted to thinking that maybe I got them wet and the sound is due to water being on the speaker driver. It’s driving me crazy so I contacted Apple support.

Apple support told me to unpair, cradle them for 30 seconds, reset, then re-pair. Didn’t work. Due to the world being on lockdown from the virus, I couldn’t take them in to Apple, so the agent told me to take them to an authorized service center, which for me was my local Best Buy. Went to Best Buy today to get them replaced. Geek Squad agent said they don’t swap them but need to send them in to Apple. She continued to explain that this process will take 6-8 weeks. Ugh!

I rely on these for work as I’m on the phone all day long - now more than ever. So I thought I should check out the forums tonight. Never in my thought process did I think that this issue could be so prevalent. I’m shocked. What’s happened to Apple? I love these ear buds (when they work), but to see the dates on people’s threads going back for months is concerning to me. I thought Apple products are nearly flawless once they hit the market? Isn’t that the rationale behind their prestige and justification for erring on the side of higher priced?

I read someone’s comments regarding the noise happening while in ANC or Transparency Modes, but not occurring when they are off. I tried this and my situation is the same. When the buds are in ANC mode, without anything being played, I can softly tap my finger on the bud (both) and the crackling sound occurs. When I turn ANC off and then tap the same way, the crackle is gone.

Not sure what to do now. I guess I’ll keep ANC off when I make calls, but this is less than ideal as I use these a lot while driving.

Mr Cook, please have your team solve this issue with urgency. I’m counting on you guys to do what you do best - make great products that are consistently reliable.

After speaking to Apple support on chat they told me to bring it to an authorized retailer. I took it to the local one (not Best Buy) and dropped it off. They told me it usually takes 4/7 business days for a fix. It was repaired and ready for pick up a day later and are working great. Unfortunately the dude at the counter and my receipt don’t show a detail of what they did, but they are the original ones (not refurbished/new from Apple replacements).

Yep.. right airbud... me, too. I'm so disappointed - I wanted to love these after jumping with blind faith that they would perform to justify the price. I have zero problem paying for Apple products, I'm a diehard lover of all things Apple, but I can't take the cracklin' when I'M TRYING TO DROWN OUT MY 11 YEAR OLD GIRL and her friends AND their screaming!! Looks like we aren't getting anywhere unless the responses are hiding somewhere I can't find. Cracklin' or girl drama.. I don't know what's worse!! ugh

I was hoping that this update to iOS it would be fixed - but NO! My left side is crackling like it always has. I don't understand how they don't focus on this to fix it. These are huge money makers for the company. It is a big disappointment and makes me concerned about future products. if they cannot support a premium product like this what can everyone expect with other products. especially now with everyone working from home.

I'm convinced that it has something to do with the microphone that filters sounds. It happened to me as well after owing the Pros for about 3 months and using them on a daily basis. As it became progressively worse - at first it would stop when I used noice cancelation, but then all of the time - I finally called Apple Support (1-800-MyApple). We went through the routine of unpairing and re-pairing the AirPods. In the end, Apple sent me a new right AirPod, which I received the next day via FedEx. Problem solved. Unfortunately, this appears to be a common issue.
