memory upgrade mac mini 2010 -won't power up

I read on line I can take my mac mini (mid-2010) to 16GB

However when I load the 2x 8GB DDR3 modules the mac will not boot, it "beeps"

I have removed each module and booted and the Mac shows each time 8GB available, which suggests both modules are bootable.

I have also loaded a 8GB with a 4GB and it boots, so both slots are fine.

It just won't boot the 2x 8GB

Any suggestions ?

Yeah , that is most likely the issue. As woodmeister says, Macs are notoriously picky about the RAM. The symptoms you describe with both modules working when individually installed with the original RAM, is a common complaint when using mismatched RAM speeds.

Try doing a PRAM reset with both modules installed:

It will sometimes help when hardware configuration changes

are not recognized.

Also, as mentioned, Macs are sometimes fussy in terms of having

the exact RAM that is specified for a model any any other spec is

a "crapshoot". And the fact that it works with one of the old 4G

modules could just simply mean it is setting up the system based on it.

Every memory module has a small chip that identifies it to the host

system. If the computer reads it and doesn't recognize the type of

modules. it won't work.

These are Hynix DDR3, Im not sure of the module pin count, but I ordered memory for the Mac Mini, and it fits comfortably in the slots and operates as independantly so I presume its the right module. It is 1333 MHz, is that an issue ? I would have thought a higher speed would not be detrimental.

What I ordered was DDR3 1333MHz PC3-10600 SODIMM

In case of other comments it looks like your motherboard's EFI might be not updated. You can check some updates by macOS or at Apple's site for your model. Also when you perform a clean install fo latest compatible macOS from bootable USB on formatted HDD it will also update your EFI. Hynix is whitelisted RAM. I have all Hynix's in Powermac G5 and also buying them for new models.
