Password request for deleted email account.

When trying to send an email I often get a request for the password. However the password it is asking for is for an account I no longer use and have removed. I checked my preferences and it is not listed yet it keeps asking me for it. I have closed and restarted the app but it did not correct the issues. This has been going on for weeks now. Any thoughts on how to correct it? The email account is not an Apple account. It was an old company email I used.

As a guess...

Mail accounts have two sets of credentials, one for receiving and reading mail (involving POP or IMAP), and one for sending mail (involving SMTP or ESMTP). The receiving credentials have likely been removed here, but probably not the sending credentials.

In High Sierra, you can vie the SMTP/ESMTP server settings in Mail (Mail.app > Preferences > Accounts > Server Settings > Outgoing Mail Account > Select Edit SMTP Server List) and you'll want to remove any stale entries found there.
