Every time I try a usb flash drive with my adapter, I get a message saying
”Cannot use this Accessory”
This accessory requires too much power.
I’ve tried San disk & other makes ranging from 16gb to 64gb
Any ideas please.
The Apple Store employees do not always have the right/correct answers.
They sold you the wrong adapter.
I never trust the Apple Store employees for many technical questions or issues.
You never know if you are dealing with a new employee that doesn't know very much or one that has been with a store for awhile and knows what they are doing.

It sounds like you are not using Apple’s Lightning to USB 3 Adapter. This adapter includes a Lightning power pass through port which allows you to connect iPad’s charging lead to power both the connected accessory as well as the iPad.
You need to purchase the actual, genuine Apple Lightning to USB-3 camera adapter, from Apple, and plug that adapter into power using your iPad charge cable and Apple power/charging block!

This is THE ONLY adapter that works!
Cheaper ( cheap in price and quality ) third party adapters simply WILL NOT WORK!!!!
With Lightning connector equipt iPads, you need this adapter as it has a power connection to power both the iPad and to connect a commonplace USB flash memory drive or portable SSD drive.
Without the additional power to the iPad, USB flash drives and portable SSD drives will NOT work with older iPads with the Lightning connector.
The Lightning connector alone cannot convey the necessary power requirements needed for normal USB style flash memory drives.
There are lots of YouTube videos that discuss and demonstrate this.

I went to my local Apple store, showed them my flash drive, asked how I could use it with my iPad. The staff said I just needed the lightning camera adapter which they sold me, it is the genuine Apple one.
Without knowing much about this, I trusted what the staff told & followed their advice.

Wrong.
Any Lightning based iPad will support import and export of data, using the Lighning to USB-3 adapter, as long as external power is supplied to the adapter.
I can show you YouTube videos to the contrary.
This adapter IS THE ONLY adapter that works with ANY Lightning connector equipt iPads.
I’ve just watched two videos on YouTube, both are saying these adapters only work with the 12.9 iPad, smaller ones don’t support usb 3 transfers!!
