Installed Catalina and now get error 54 when attempting to download purchased items. Has also decided that I am not allowed to copy cds, get error 54 message. Music is in an external drive if that makes any difference

Made no difference. Can't download music. Can download to my laptop and ipad. Can't copy cds from an external drive, but can on my laptop which is running High Sierra. Must be the OS but no idea why. That's why I am appealing to this community of experts. FWIW have never had any such issues in the past.
What is the path to the media folder listed under Music > Preferences > Files? Did you check the permissions to that folder?

I have changed the destination from the external drive to the internal drive and nothing has changed. Permissions for the computers hard drive? How would I verify this?
