Battery Indicator stuck at 100% All day

My battery indicator stays at 100% and then will die without warning. Has anyone had this issue? It started doing this within 2 weeks of receiving the watch, the update (6.1) did fix it temporarily and then a couple of days ago, it started again.

Apple Watch Series 5, watchOS 6

I sent my Series 5 into the repair center (well, my Apple Store sent it there) and it bounced back from them after a couple days, saying they couldn't replicate the problem. They were useless. It's like the Apple Watch falls into this gulch, as far as Apple support goes. It's the only thing they can't try to fix in the store, at their own Genius Bar. And they weren't that happy with the Apple repair center either. Before I read about the turn it off for 15 min and then back on again, I had literally tried every single thing except getting a new watch (which the store said I couldn't get, since Apple Care didn't cover a repair when they couldn't find the problem). But I've read about people here who got new ones and it didn't help the problem. I've restored from previous, from scratch, put it in the freezer (worked a couple days), taken it to the Genius Bar three times and talked to support in Cupertino (I pay $500 a year for Joint Venture Business Support) and the only consistent thing I ever got was that it was a software issue. No updates ever helped. My previous four Apple Watches, each of the series, didn't have this problem. But then I did the 15 min off and back on (I can't remember how much it was already charged when I did that. I think I did it when it had said 100% for 24 hours and I knew it would in the next 6 hours just randomly die. I haven't had any problems since then and that's been around 2-3 months ago that I did it. If anything, it uses up the battery a tiny bit faster than it used to.

So, after dealing with this for a few weeks and trying all the suggestions, I got on a chat and they immediately said I could send it for them to look at. I got the message it was delivered to the tech center and less than 8 hours later got a message that the problem couldn't be replicated and they were sending it back. I immediately got on a chat with them and said how can that be, you didn't even have it long enough to run tests, etc. etc. but the insisted. Well, when I got "my" watch back, I discovered it was not my watch. I'd put a screen protector on it, which was gone, so I checked the serial numbers and they were nowhere close. They replaced it. (Which is totally fine, but why be weird about it? Just say they've had a few with this weird problem and so sorry, they are replacing it.) So, clearly they know there is a problem and they do not know how to fix it. The other I've had for over 2 months without a hint of a problem.

I let mine sit at 100 percent for several hours then shut it completely off for 15 min. When I turned it back on it was at 85 percent where I felt it should be. It now seems to be correct but I’m sure that will change over time. For those with this issue try powering off completely for 15 min after it’s been stuck at 100 for awhile and see what happens.

Replacing the watch, setting up as new etc doesn't fix it. It's some battery indicator issue. It's temporarily fixed by turning the watch off for 30 min or so. After a few charge cycles its back to being stuck at 100% for too many hours. Hopefully a software update will fix this. Battery life is still lasting me 30+ hours just never know when its going to die.

It has worked a few days now, so I will update also. I had done multiple hard resets and pair/unpairs - set up from old backup and as new. I left the watch off for a while. No freezer.

And the next pairing, it just worked. It ran as a basic watch for 2-3 days fine, before I cautiously added a new watch face with complications. Still OK. Runs down nicely during the day as it should.

So. either those things worked, OR iMore was again correct in saying we just need to wait a few day after installing the new beta (Jan 14) for the watch to catch up.

The same issue occurred on my iPhone 6s last year. However, haven't experienced on my Apple Watch Series 3, running the latest watchOS 6.

Probably, you need to update your watch to the latest software. One of the drawbacks of this issue is your watch cheats you as you are always under the impression that the watch does not need charging.

Alternatively, you can unpair the watch and pair it again with your iPhone. Try multiple solutions until you get success.

Seems like no matter what you do.....all that works for awhile is to turn it off for 15 min and back on and then you'll get an accurate reading, which for me is usually 75% vs when it's stuck at 100%. People buy new watches and get the same problem. They start from scratch, they link to a previous watch setting, they put it in the freezer (works for a few days), and it seems to happen on all versions. I didn't have it until I got my series 5. Updates don't change anything. Multiple genius bar visits and calls and sending it in didn't change anything. Best advice I got was that it was probably a setting in the iphone software. But what can you do besides staying up to date? This was the first Apple Watch I had with an iphone XsMax. That is absolutely the only thing I can think of. I don't use many apps on my iphone besides Wallet, weather apps, bank app and PayPal and Venmo. A mystery. Who knows?

I agree with this solution. I went thru all of the fixes in January, which finally worked. The past couple of betas did not cause the 100% issue, but yesterday's watchOS beta 3 brought it back. I noticed midday today that it was still at 100%. I turned it off for 10-15 minutes, it came on at 97%, and now after being on 15 more minutes, it dropped to 75% - which is probably where it really was when it said 100%.

Hi all -- What are some of your charging and usage patterns? I'm wondering if there is a usage pattern here that is similar across many of the people with this issue.

For me, I wear it to bed for sleep tracking and alarm clock, so before the issue started for me, I used to charge it while I was getting ready for bed, and then I would charge it for a few minutes in the morning while I get ready for the day, never charging it to 100% any time, but for those few minutes in the morning and the evening would get me to where I would need to be. Sometimes I would forget and have to do a longer session to catch up, but not the norm.

Also worth noting that resting it while turned off on the counter for 15 minutes or so after having charged it to 100% seems to be working for me as it has for others.

I purchased my Series 5 watch about 4 months ago. After 3-3.5 months I started having this issue. Watch would show 70%, I'd go workout and 10 minutes in the watch would die and not restart until I put it on a charger. As soon as it hit the charger it would show 50% battery remaining. That night I saw an update was pending for 6.2.1 and installed it that night and assumed the issue was resolved, but it persisted.

It eventually got to a point where it continually showed 100%, even after being off the charger for 24+ hours.

After 2 hours otp with support doing remote diagnostics, unpairing, factory resetting, etc... they put in the repair ticket and issued a replacement. My new Series 5 should be here tomorrow.

Hopefully this new one lasts more than 3.5 months.

This is Catscanner, who first started this thread. It's both reassuring to keep seeing comments on this issue and disheartening, since it means that all the updates since I first wrote about it have had little effect. For me, I haven't had the problem in awhile. I did the thing of turning the phone off for 20 minutes when it seemed like it was stuck at 100%. I haven't had the problem is a few months, ever since I read about someone doing that. I put my watch on the charger when I get up and then for maybe 30 min before I get in bed at night. So when I go to bed it's usually between 75-95 and when I get up it's down to 75 again and then I charge it to 100. If anything, the battery seems to run out faster than it used to. I have a Series 5. I've had all the versions. Didn't start for me until I'd had the Series 5 a couple months. I got the 5 right when it first came out. It's been helpful to read that sending it in for repair, as well as just getting an new one, didn't really work out for people. My Apple store wouldn't let me use Applecare to replace the watch, since the repair place couldn't replicate the issue. Even though they only had it for 24 hours. But when I got it back, it worked great for awhile, even though they didn't do anything. But I guess it was turned off for awhile. Thanks to everyone who has commented. Maybe someone at Apple is finally noticing. For sure, no one at the Genius Bar in my local store or the support staff in Cupertino, had ever heard of it, at the time. (I have the Joint Venture support (a business deal), plus I went to the Genius Bar here a few times.

About a month after I purchased my Series 5 watch I had the same problem. I contacted an Apple tech who tested my battery which was fine. He walked me through a bunch of steps nothing worked. But then after unpairing and shutting everything down it’s been months and I have had no issues. What was mind boggling though was that the tech acted as though he had not heard anything about this problem. 🤪 ??
