iPhone won't connect to Mac

My iPhone no longer connects or syncs to my Mac and doesn't show up in iTunes or Finder when I plug it in. I wonder whether it's a hardware issue (?) as I've also been having trouble charging my phone (90% of time I have to pull out and put back in at the USB end before it starts charging). I also tried a different cable and this didn't work either. Any thoughts about what I should do?
