My AirPods will not connect to iPhone X or iPad Pro

Anybody else have an issue where airpods dont auto connect? The only way they will connect is by deleting them off Bluetooth and reconnecting but that only lasts until I place them in charging case and to re use them after I have to go through process again of deleting them off phone? And its not just my phone as I have to use that workaround for my iPad as well.
