Choose active App in Split View

When using a split view with spaces: if I move to a split-view space, one of the apps is default to active.. How can I pick which app is first active when switching to that split-view?

No, I'm looking to determine which app is active without any interaction. Like which one is default. I believe I figured it out, these steps seem to be working for me:

1) Make app full-screen

2) Grab second app and drag-and-drop to spaces to combine split screen

The app from #1 will now be the 'default active app' when switching to this space.
