CDs ripping much more slowly with Catalina

I buy CDs frequently and rip them to my iTunes (now Music) library. I have a 2017 MB 1.4 i7/16GB. I have my music library on a USB 3.0 HDD and I rip using a USB 3.0 BD player/burner. I have used the same setup for a few years. Before upgrading to Catalina, typical rip times were a minute or two and now my average is probably 10. If it was one or two CDs, I would chalk it up for CD condition and error correction, but that is not it. I have looked in Music and Settings and can't find any relevant settings to change. I tried a test ripping with XLD and was getting speeds from 5.5x-5.8x which is faster (in rip time since Music provides no feedback) but still about half what I am used to. Any ideas?
