Logic Pro X causes a kernel panic when I drag the cursor to move things within the mix on macOS Catalina

When dragging things like automation or channel strips within Logic, my MacBook pro freezes and restarts with the 'Your computer restarted because of a problem' error message. Here is the crash log code that pops up after it crashes if it helps:

Two things to try with your >>MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) with AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2 GB, Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB.

  1. Unsure if this applies.... some Macbooks have automatic Graphics switching between the two Graphics processors. The iris is mainly a software integrated processor using the CPU and system memory, the Radeon is hardware. Go to System Preferences/Energy Saver and De-Select Automatic Graphics Switching.
  2. Go to the Applications folder, right click the Logic application icon and do a Get Info. There should a place (checkbox) to run Logic in non-Retina or Lo-Res mode.

See if one of these helps.

p.s. disabling graphics switching runs everything off the Radeon graphics.

Initially the only thing that installed a kext file was Soundflower. I uninstalled that, no change. I did a fresh install of Catalina & Logic. SAME freakin kernel panic...

I am now attempting to reinstall 10.4.6 from Time Machine. I’m done trying to make this work with Catalina.

One of those things, I used to work for a DAW company that went out of business, I would always wait to update my OS until it was necessary for music production. I now work in consumer electronics and got swept up in the automatic installs, marketing got the better of me... Last time I make that mistake.

One would think, the hardware company that also makes the software would ensure that software works on the new OS. That’s almost certainly an entry for “QA” in Wikipedia...

Advice to anyone having this issue, after dealing with it for 2 weeks, reading every forum I could find on it, there is no solution, accept reinstall the previous OS. Make a backup. Time Machine, install a fresh copy of OS 14, then migrate your files.

Unless Apple decides to fix this in a patch...

My guess is that it’s hardware related, possibly a video card that was not tested properly.

FWIW, I’m on a late 2015 15” 2.5Ghz MBP (not one that had the recall)

Just to add to my previous comment on kext. macOS come loaded with a lot of kexts. Many are likely provided by third party manufacturers. So the hardware/video relation makes sense.

+1 SuperDuper and a fast external drive and you have an instantly usable (bootable) backup.

I experienced the exact same thing! With Catalina 10.15.1 I had random complete crash-and-reboot, especially when opening menus in Logic Pro X and Mainstage (but also when dragging around windows of Terminal.app!). Each time the crash report looked like some graphics driver issue.

Now with 10.15.2 I have random stalls for 10 seconds when I use menus in Logic Pro X and Mainstage. Most other apps on Catalina seem to not trigger this issue. My best guess is that it is still a graphics driver issue, because graphics look pretty messed up for a while until elements are redrawn.

Using MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) with AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2 GB, Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB.

I have a M-Audio Keystation 88 with the same problem - the program seems to recognize it but when I press keys on the keyboard it can sometimes re-size the window (almost acting like im hitting a function key on my typing keyboard????

I'm running Catalina 15.4.3 - I know it's a beta but had the same issue on release version so I figured I'd update the beta with "bug fixes" in it.
