Macbook Sleep Wake failure in EFI (Failure code:: 0xffffffff 0x0000001f)

I have two macbook's, one model end 2018 and one model begin 2019.

They both suffer from the same problem with a fresh installation (also reset NVRAM, PRAM, SMC).

The crash reason: Sleep Wake failure in EFI

Failure code:: 0xffffffff 0x0000001f

I already contacted Senior Support for this and have a running case for both.

If you run into the same problem, please let me know here.

To trace down the problem more info of different devices can be useful.

If I get feedback that solves it, I'll post it here.

I had the same problem, and finally found a very odd solution. In my case, after a lot of frustrating work, I traced the problem to an old USB hub I was using on my new mac. Once I disconnected the old USB hub, the problem immediately stopped. In my case, it was surprising and very lucky to discover that the problem seemed to be associated with an attached electronic component. Hope this helps you.

I have the same issue MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) macOS Catalina Version 10.15.4 only happens when I close the MacBook pro to sleep overnight this morning even before touching my laptop it just restarts on its own twice now. Tried replicating the issue to show the crash report nothing works as advertised. I will post the crash report if this reccurs again.

Every release of Catalina has come with a new set of firmware...every minor release. This also is a problem because it means trying out the dot release on a separate SSD now also updates your MAC firmware meaning that you install on the internal SSD will now inherit new firmware and any bugs that came with it. YOu could try and see if your machne is up to date with firmware and that it updated correctly. Apparently failure to update the firmware does not stop the OS upgrade so you can get upgraded but be running wrong firmware. Apple stopped allowing you to upgrade firmware separately outside the OS upgrade but also does not publish what is the correct firmware. You could try some thing like below to check your firmware versions.

https://eclecticlight.co/lockrattler-systhist/

Personally I've ceased doing any upgrades at all due to the problems with external monitors with Catalina between, resolution, HDR and incorrect resolutions etc. I've not tried the above program but at least it may tell you if its worth while reinstalling the OS again as that is the only way to update the firmware.

Same. Every. Single. Day. Same problem. Same result. Is this normal for Apple to not address issues like this?

i own a consulting business with 37 employees and a medical device company with over 5,000 employees. The consulting biz has been in the process of switching over to Mac for the whole office. That conversion is going to stop. I have never seen a company like Apple mess something up with badly? Is this normal? I was a life long PC guy, but it looks like Apple is just ignoring this? Or am I missing something? Again, not a tech guy, but this happens to every single one of the 26 macs we have every day. It’s a huge joke in the office. “Hey Will, where are ya going? Panic Shut down boss” hahahahaha or “I’m going to be an hour late tomorrow....I feel a sleep wake failure coming on” I am so glad that I didn’t drop another $20,000 to replace the other laptops and I am SO HAPPY that we only bought them for the consulting company. I would have looked like the dumbest CEO ever if I had purchased 5000 of them for the medical company I own and run!!!!! Hahaha. Whew. At least we have been able to warn our clients about it.

May 10, 2020 1:23 PM in response to Eric Z9001

@Ericz9001 You can get all that information from the command line if you want to check if that is your issue. Its explained in the article below.

https://eclecticlight.co/2019/10/08/which-efi-firmware-should-your-mac-be-using-version-4/

Simply run the apple command line. Get the returned values for the firmware and then validate that the firmware is a valid version for the OS your running. The program simply pulls together alot of information that is available to trouble shoot the MAC but if you would rather be in CLI to troubleshoot yourself then the information to do so is provided as well.

**** it. I had this problem around two weeks ago, and posted about it then, and I was hoping the problem was solved, since it hasn't happened since. But now, I turned off my Mac(Retina, 13-inch, 2019) for 1 hour and 30 minutes, and I get this failure for the second time. There is a new software update though. Has anyone downloaded that and had success with this issue?

May 25, 2020 2:14 PM in response to mariusvw

Same issue on my daughter's older Macbook Pro retina 13-inch 11,1 Late 2013.

She was running Mojave and had a nearly full 120 GB Hard-drive. She was having performance issues because of the full drive. The described restarting behavior did not exist at that time.

I replaced the HD with a new 480 GB Internal SSD (from OtherWorld Computing) and migrated the files with time machine. I also installed TechTool and Norton 360.

Unattended restarts began after that--usually in the middle of the night or early morning with the laptop closed but sleeping.

I first did a scan with Techtool and found a single voltage issue that I believe is traceable to a third party power adapter--which I am replacing (not yet arrived). This problem pre-existed the restarting issue as it was detected on a tech tool scan months ago. Not likely the cause of this new behavior.

I found no other issues with TechTool. I cleared the pRAM. It did not fix the restarts. I upgraded the software to Catalina from Mojave. It did not fix the restarts. I recleared the pRAM. No improvement.

My next steps are to open the laptop and recheck the HD connections. If that does not fix the issue, I will uninstall Norton and Techtool to see what happens. I will also check if a new power supply helps, but she has had the current non-apple power supply for months but only experienced restarts since the HD update.

The most likely culprit is the new HD. The problem existed before and after Catalina, so I can't blame it on the Catalina OS. There are no attached peripherals. The machine was not plugged in during the restarts. I am attaching the crash error log below in case it's helpful to someone.

Please post solutions and I will post updates as I experiment further.

Same issue with MacBook Pro 16". Just got new machine 10 days ago. Works great while on power adapter, but goes to deep sleep after couple hours and cannot wake up without rebooting. No external physical connections to it, only bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I am returning this $3700 Mac.

Similar issue on new 2019 MBP15, less than a month old. Intermittent, not always. Usually happens after a very long nap, more than 12 hours, and body was warm, seems stuck in some process.

---------------------------------------------------

Tried many things - reinstall MacOS, reset PRAM, reset SMC, turn off FileVault, update to 10.15.5, all failed. Suspect hardware but unsure after reading so many having similar issue. Modified Standby Delay and High Standby Delay to 1800 and 3600, might lessen the time to show symptom, however not showing no-wake after the shorter delays but only after much longer period (probably >12 hours), and intermittently.

There is one way to kind of 'fix' this problem, which is Safe-Boot. Boot into Safe Mode and reboot afterward, laptop wakes everyday without problem for a week, even after very long nap, until my itchy hands did SMC reset and the next morning failed to wake.

Contacted Apple.

Jun 4, 2020 2:41 AM in response to mariusvw

So, i have this only when a USB-C Monitor is connected. And it seems like to only appear after i updated to 10.15.5. Very unfortunate. Had to issue the 'sudo pmset -a standby 0' workaround to be able to continue to use my mac. It crashed everytime it went to standby with external monitor connected. Not usable at all. Of Course i tried all the other voodoo before like: Again running the 10.15.5 Combo Updater, NVRAM & SMC Reset, Launchagents & Launchdeamons delete in safe mode and what not. Kinds disappointed, this is the kind of stuff you expect from random windows machines.
